I think you guys are confusing something, this is a game not real life. Just look at WoW, I am a Mage that can craft armor "Blacksmithing". A mage have no use for armor, yet he and train it and sell it but can't use it. Before you yell "only a noob do that", let me remind you that WoW is also a game and it was amusing to have a blacksimthing mage.

Back to the point, I agree it is frustrating to have the tool tip say that we train up BO skills. Then invest into those prereq's to discover that you can't do it. The point is that, it states "if you do ABC, then you be granted XYZ", and that isn't happening.

For you real life example buffs. I am Home PC Repair tech, and naturally I can train people on how to use their PC's. I can also teach you how to take great pictures. I can teach you how to do a proper titeration. I can also teach you how cook SE asian and chinese food. However professionally I am a Home PC Repair Tech. Just in case you don't get it. What one's profession has little to no bearing on what they can teach you.

I was caught out by this too.

If the tootip says it, then it should work that way.

It may be a little illogical for a scientist to teach engineering skills but since when have game mechanics always been completely logical.

Dunno why all this flaming over a completely reasonable (if a bit long) original post.

Actually, it DOES tell you this in the game text. It's there. You just missed it.

Early in the game Admiral Quinn gives you a mission to talk to Commander Balt in the personnel office (at Earth Spacedock). Balt tells you about skills. If you missed this, you can still go back to Balt at any time and read his dialogue:-

Q. How do I give my Bridge Officers the best skills possible?

(Continued) You will only be able to train Bridge Officers who share your career path. A Captain who is a scientist cannot train his or her tactical officer how to fire a torpedo spread.
I agree, it's not obvious. But it's there.

Yep he does say that, just confirmed it (guess I missed that). That is too bad. Elminates an whole segment of caracter customization.

Perhaps you should repost the thread as a suggestion.

I am making a thread suggesting a fix to the tool tips.

PS: please use the hand rule in the forums. If your post is longer text wise then your hand it is too long. this is the forum not school.

I like the game mechanics of tactical teaching tactical skills and science teaching science etc etc it helps to diversify play styles for the various classes of officers.
However i think it needs to be signposted alot more clearly about who can train what because people who do not read the forums (and with all the qq i dont blame them) likely wont know this.

I'm A science player but have 2 tac officers, I want to try an escort someday so I've been looking for high yield 3 also.

It's rare cause no one sells it or it goes quick off the exchange.

I bought torpedo spread 3 for a freaking steal.

I've SEEN high yield three ONCE, but the person wanted something like a million energy so I didn't bite. I'll find it for a steal yet.

I agree with you that it's "working as intended." I mean, I don't think it's an accident.

Look, the main issue really is that there's currently no way for a science or engineering Captain to get a BO who has High Yield Torpedoes III (or the other unobtainable skills, just using HYT III as an example).

I was suggesting to fix this by letting us train outside out class, but it seems that (surprisingly to me) some players strongly agree with this limitation, that we shouldn't be able to train BOs who are not the same class as their Captain.

Well, if Cryptic won't remove that limitation, then it would be cool if they did revise the way that BOs are randomly generated in the game so that you have a chance to get one with some of these currently unobtainable skills, like HYT III or Scramble Sensors III or Engineering Team III.

Currently there's no way to get a BO with those skills unless you are the same class and train them.

Another idea would be to have BOs not be bound, but instead tradeable, or at least movable between your own chars. Then you could buy pre-trained ones, or level up a second char to use as a BO trainer in that field. It might add depth and replay value, or not. What do you think?

Just a suggestion.

The cross-class training thing can really be argued either way and seems to be a more controversial issue than I anticipated. I can think of reasons on both sides.

You didn't see my post. I'll copy paste it for you.

What I've seen is a result of roughly 2 hours of searching on the exhange total over a period of three days last week. Haven't tried this week yet, lvling my 2nd character.

Really? I did notice that prior to the patch that fixed the Aceton Field III BO bug, then it would let you back out of the BO reward screen and then go back in, and then all the listed stuff would randomly change. But often it would still deliver you the first thing you saw, but not always. It now just shows one thing and never changes. It also seems that after that patch was when I started noticing the Level III skill limitations. Prior to that, i was too poor, and too low-level so I never looked at BOs on the exchange.

If there ever were BOs with HYT III then I think that patch made it impossible. I could be wrong, I just have never seen one. Perhaps people just aren't selling them? Anyone seen one since that patch? I've seen plenty with HYT II.

I still have a hard time believing that they're out there, though, since I've looked for many days and not seen a single one. Can anyone at Cryptic tell us if they are indeed out there?

(And BTW I did see your post, I was just responding to it separately.)
