# 1 PvE is meh
03-25-2010, 10:21 PM
I did a PvE mission today to get a quest reward that looked good (normally I only play PvP). I was impressed that the Romulan military ground security system consists of small groups of people standing together within line of sight of other groups that refuse to help them.

You'd think maybe they'd have an alarm system or something. Or like, comm badges. Or just the ability to shout, "HEY, SOME FEDS ARE TRYING TO KILL US OVER HERE. A LITTLE HELP?"

Really lame, uninspired PvE in this game. The stories are actually interesting but the actual implementation is just plain dumb. As an actual TV episode it would be a combination of horrific and silly, as the brave Federation totally massacres these people who are clearly only barely capable of resisting and to make it worse, all the Romulans have 20/800 vision, are nearly deaf and have random kitchen implements stuck in their shirts instead of the com-links, never realizing that all this time they've been talking into a fork.

Also, I felt kind of bad about killing a Romulan who got rezzed by a medic, then he died again, then got rezzed again, then died again, then got rezzed again, then died again and finally poofed as I kept stunning and knocking the medic down. The medic seemed really intent on saving him. Like, it's not enough that I killed this poor Romulan soldier who was just doing his job. I killed him like 5 times. And then I killed the medic. Well, at least she won't have to mourn the loss of her beloved guard-mate or anything...

Umm why have you singled out pve for this "unrealistic" rant .
Did you see that episode of Star trek where 5 klingons where fighting 5 federation officers , each side kept dying and coming back to life , even after they got vaporised ...... etc etc

Edit : umm there may of actually been an episode like that but I am sure it involved some sort of spatial anomily

Well, we could expand this to every MMO where enemies only aggro when you ar x feet from them, instead of all charging at you the instant you come into view. And why do enemy ships ignore me at 10.1 km, but not 10.0 km? I mean, I see them at 25 km...

Regardless of whatever technical and design limitations there are, it comes down to the simple concept -- the amount of enemies you have to fight / ships you have to engage for the game to be "entertaining" would make it utterly impossible for you realistically ... unless you traveled with a lot of people or a fleet.

A mission to take out 8 squadrons of starships, any of which could be frigate/BOP types, escort types, and battleships? You'd be utterly overwhelmed if they worked in concert and as a cohesive unit. Same with ground missions.

Unless you want a largely stealth/deception based game, or a game that requires a full group to level with, this is simply how it has to be. I don't believe Cryptic or any other MMO developer has the time and resources to devote to make every, or even most, missions enthralling and engaging on such a "realistic" level.

Because this is the Federation forum and not the PvP forum. :-p I ranted plenty about the PvP missions, too, just not here.

And yes, silliness like this happens in every MMO but it's somewhat excusable when you're killing orcs, which are not known for their communications or beaming technologies.

It would be interesting to contemplate the design of "realistic" PvE missions. Every enemy ship would have an agro range of 25km and the mission would simply be designed to not throw too many of them at you at once.

You simply wouldn't do a mission by yourself against an entire Romulan base, or if you did, you would have SIGNIFICANT allied help from NPCs or other players -- there are missions like this, in fact.

But it sounds like the prevailing attitude is, "Oh, PvE will always suck and be dumb, we just learned to cope with it." :p

While I like Pve very much (still waiting on the de-bugging of pvp, not to mention a more open format for it), I too wish the enemies would use more logical and tactical strategies in combat. It is funny to kill a bunch of enemies and not arouse suspicions from thier nearby allies.
I do find space combat to be more intuitive and a tougher fight, as the enemies attempt to use tactics and abilities more often.

There is an entire planet like that. It's where Kai Opaka ended up.

Original Star Trek episode. Day of the Dove.

An entity kept bringing a group of Klingons and a few Starfleet Officers back to life when they were killed so that it could feed off their fear and anger.
