Get a packet capture started right before you start the launcher (make sure there aren't any star trek online.exe running in task manager), start the launcher, and save that capture when it fails.

Well it never technically fails, it just keeps reseting, I've gotten as high as 21 tries before giving up. I captured a full cycle though, how do I get the info to you?

OK it looks like something between the STO client and the Cryptic server is blocking the connection.

Take a look at that packet capture. On this line, right click and select Follow TCP Stream

17 10.392423 192.168.0.100 52879 208.95.184.25 7255 TCP 52879 > 7255 [SYN] Seq=0 Win=8192 Len=0 MSS=1460 WS=2 66

You'll see that your client keeps trying to connect to 208.95.184.25 on TCP 7255 until it finally resets at 31.74 seconds in. This is where it times out and tried again.

There is an initial setup on the SYN, SYN - ACK, ACK that incldues
Quote:
Cryptic 2
Compress 1
CRC 1
What I'd like for you to do is when the launcher is running and it keeps trying to connect try to telnet on 7255 to the patch server. Run your packet capture while STO launcher is repeating the connection attempt and your are trying the telnet connection.

Telnet port test

From a command prompt (Start - Run - Cmd) telnet to the patch server to see if the TCP port is open. You can install telnet client if it isn't on the system easily.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...sked-questions

Telnet on port 7255 to netttest.crypticstudios.com and patchserver.crypticstudios.com

Example:

c:\telnet patchserver.crypticstudios.com 7255

After hitting enter a few times, you should get this if you are connecting on tcp 7255.
Quote:
Error "bad connection header"

Connection to host lost.

c:\>
A failed telnet connection on TCP 7255 will return cursor lines but not the above error from the server.

What I'd like for you to time is trying to telnet on tcp 7255 to the patch server at the same time the STO program is attempting to connect on the same port and to the patch server.

We should see a failed telnet attempt (packet capture will show you when you tried telnet in relation to the STO launcher update attempts.

I just did a fresh capture on my side, here is where it is broken on your side.

Quote:
192.168.1.105 49287 208.95.184.25 7255 TCP 49287 > 7255 [PSH, ACK] Seq=1 Ack=1 Win=65700 Len=31 85
you should see this PSH, ACK response from the patch server

Quote:
208.95.184.25 7255 192.168.1.105 49287 TCP 7255 > 49287 [PSH, ACK] Seq=1 Ack=32 Win=65504 Len=31 85
Your client just keeps trying to send the PSH, ACK but never gets a reply from the patch server, like in my example above.

So we know that your PC, at the Wireshark capture level, is showing that you aren't getting the DATA packet replies back from Cryptic. 208.95.184.25 TCP 7255 to your internal IP and port with a PSH, ACK reply.

If you happen to have a hub (not a switch, but an old hub) and another PC/laptop available with a wired network adapter you can do a promiscuous packet capture to see the traffic outside of the STO PC.

The STO PC is connected to the hub on a port
Your 2nd PC/laptop is connected to the hub on a port
The hub is connected to your modem or router on the LAN side

You install Wireshark with WinPcap on the 2nd PC. When you run the packet capture you use promiscuous turned on so you see all traffic on the hub.

If you see the PSH, ACK traffic on the capture from 208.95.184.25 to your STO PC IP, you know that something local to the PC is blocking the connection. If you don't then you know something at your router / modem or ISP level is blocking that return traffic from Cryptic.
