How about you use a hue then a numerical denomination to list how light and dark it is.

Then some specific colors could be named like "Red shirt red" and "Engineering gold" and "Science blue" This way people who want the classic colors can find them easily.

I also support this initiative. Being Red-Green colour deficient myself, I've taken to screencapping the colour palette and opening it in photoshop so I can read the RGB values.

Having even an RGB value tooltip would be excellent, as I too don't understand the fascination with naming colours after bizarre things like "Stained Pomegranate".
