To begin with, a ship is going to start off with 100 weapons energy in attack mode. One beam overload clears out this entire weapons energy pool for a shot that does somewhere around 3-4 times more damage. However, in reality, this is like taking a dodge ball after 3 throws that you just made, popping it, then pumping it up in front of everyone while the game is still going on around you. Meanwhile everyone else has shot 5-10 more times and you're still sitting there regenerating or forced to use your batteries for one beam overload. (So wow, now beam overload not only costs an energy pool, but costs a battery too) Now don't get me wrong, this is a good execution tactic, nothing else. Especially after the last patch which just strengthens this claim even more. I don't even need to explain how bad it is to be stuck at low power levels if you can't help it.
I thought they changed it to only reduce power by 50 points now, though I haven't tested it yet. I usually use this ablility just a few second before unloading a high yeild torp at the enemy.
One BO takes 50 energy after hte patch, even before hand, BO1 in a single shot did 600% more damage in that strike. IF you have an MK VIII phaser bank with 215 DPS, that's 1300 or so DPS in 1 hit, definitely not a waste. I use BO1 to takedown an enemy's shields, with an MK X phaser even the strongest shields fall to about 10% in 1 hit, if not collapse completely (It's particularly good against escorts that use weaker shields, insta cripple for a HY volley)
Yah I get 8,100 with beam Overload I on my science vessel, nice that it only drains 50 energy now too. With EPS consoles the drain only takes a second to recharge, even after the nerf, it's a great opener or finisher to clear the way for an incoming HYT.
Ill give beam overload another shot. Sounds like it could be very good if its only taking half the power now.
Even with the full drain, it was a pretty good power. The half drain bit isn't really a buff, more a compensation for the EPS Flow Regulator nerf, but still leaves the power decent.
It is just more situational. You don't pop it because it is up. You use it because you aren't going to be firing for a bit anyway (end of strafing run, almost dead, incoming VM), to set up another power (drop shields before using HY'd Torps), or if you want some burst (finish target now).
