Howdy all, and thanks for coming.

In most MMO's, the fastest way to level is to spec for DPS. Crowd control, threat management, and even survival talents give way to being able to grind through enemies as quickly as possible. Does this hold true in STO? I'm currently playing Tac/Cruiser, but I do wonder if it wouldn't go more quickly if I used an Escort. Thanks!

Solo, yes, an escort will level the fastest. The benefit of extra tactical BOff powers the others don't have, as well as the 10 extra attack power and faster turn rate

Assumes, of course, that you don't have problems surviving in an escort while solo, which you shouldn't if you use it properly.

That said, there really isn't much waiting at max level nor does it take long to level with any ship type. I wouldn't recommend rushing. And the time spent in cruisers is a good learning experience, if you intend to go cruiser in the end.

This game doesn't work like other MMO's. DPS isn't going to get you through things faster because of certain variables ...

Such as ...

1- Travel Time between "squadrons" ... you close distance quicker at impulse speeds, but that in turn takes your power practically offline. It then places a lot of value on EPS consoles to get back up to power quicker. Or on how you load out your power prior to a fight. Or how you switch off full impulse at 16 klicks and coast into firing range. Or ... etc, etc, etc. The slight difference between the DPS focused ship and the cruiser is offset by the travel time between spawns in just about every space battle mission ...

2- Space battle is just part of the levelling process. Your DPS does not help you in a "click to find 5 glowing objects" mission. And those are frequent. Your SPACE DPS does not help you when you have to fight on the ground. And you do. A lot. Your space DPS does not help you "aid the planet."

3- Klingons. The levelling process as a Klingon is ... different.

This is just some of the stuff off the top of my head. DPS is always an effective measuring stick against a foe. But this game isn't quite like some of the other MMO's you've played. Your all out DPS focused space ship isn't going to get you to the end of the levelling process faster than a cruiser with lots of self heals or a CC-focused science ship. Because of the other factors involved in this game's missions.

This actually favors escorts as well, since they turn faster. An escort can swing around, pick up some loot, and zip off to the next target with ease. An escort is very likely to kill the target(s) in a single head on pass, removing any need to turn in the first place.

Turn rate can help with the click ones though. There will be cases where a cruiser has to drop out of full impulse where an escort can just turn in full impulse. Your spec, on the whole, has more impact on your space kill speed than ground solo, since ground DPS is based on your BOffs in part. For the ground, DPS wins as well. I prefer 1 Sci and 3 Eng Boffs for that, with the engineering BOffs set up with either recharge shields or weapon malfunction as their first power, coupled with phaser turrets and/or support drones for the rest.

When it comes to space solo, escorts are the fastest. But, since everything in this game is fast, especially once you get to 30+, it doesn't really matter much.

If something is 25 klicks away, it's 25 klicks away. This doesn't favor any of the ships. It's an artificial timesink. An obstacle to levelling speed that DPS can't compensate for. This isn't about turning speed. This is about ... when you do a Deep Space Encounter and have to kill 10 squadrons of Terran Empire, you have distance to close between a lot of those squadrons. Your DPS does nothing to close that distance. Your full impulse engines might, but that creates power issues that you have to compensate for. Another example is when you have to kill 6 squadrons of Gorn ships during a sector patrol. And they're all in a nice little line. Each little cluster is 25 to 30 klicks away from the other. It's distance slowing all of you down. No matter what ship you choose.

This is noticable factor in levelling speed due to how ... narrow the levelling process is in this game. And due to the topic of the original post it needs to be stated ... DPS isn't what's going to help here. There are a lot of little things like that in this game which DPS isn't having any impact on. So the OP who wants to go in full bore guns blazing, because killing things "fast" levels him "fast" isn't factoring in that this game functions a bit differntly and his tactic doesn't work the way he thinks it will. He can level just as fast in any of the three ships. DPS doesn't trump all else in terms of levelling speed.

It does favor escorts, actually, because, as I said, turn rate, not DPS.

A lot of the time, it isn't a matter of 25k away, but rather, a matter of turn towards the target and close. Or loot, then head to the next one. An escort will tend to spend less time between combat than a cruiser for this reason.

And that is more pronounced in DSEs and Fleet actions, where things aren't as nicely lined up a decent distance away like they are in a patrol. Both of these situations tend to be messier, involve a larger number of bigger ships, more likely to have loot lingering around in places that are not as convenient, and so on.

Not that it all matters too much. Anyone can level quickly in this game. But an escort will be the fastest, due to fire power and turn rate.

Long answer: Since there isn't much content in STO you're best off not trying to level as fast as possible, but rather enjoy the ride, and therefore use the ship that appeals to you most.
Short answer: Escort, it's best at everything.
