So again, sorry, it iactually has a very real basis in reality, just not one that people unlucky enough to have bought lifetime subs wants to know.
It is indicitive of the fall-off any MMO goes through from launch when people go from the box time to setting up a sub. and comparing launch weekend Steam usage to any other time on a game where Steam is optional is going to be misleading (even if you hate steam you'd probably fire it via steam on the first day or two)
Todays stats I pulled earlier would indicate doom for EVE when I think everyone knows they are doing fine, with very possibly > 3x the subs of STO. Does Steam show that?
245 466 Star Trek Online
194 373 EVE Online
I don't for a second imagine STO is out-subscribing EVE. I doubt there are more people on STO than EVE.
Steam indicates otherwise. Conclusion - steam stats are meaningless.
Think LOTRO, huge numbers of players at start. than an even larger drop off then what we are seeing here at STO. Why? Bad combat systems and more.
LOTRO cleaned out those really buggy and tedious systems, replaced them with new ones and make everything flow smoothly, wallah, they suddenly start getting surprisingly high subscriptions again. Games thriving.
Never say doom.
Not until the doors locked and the keys thrown away.
Never said doom, just said that it raises a big red flag. But, now of course you're putting your $15 a month in faith that Cryptic can pull a rabbit out of a hat by raising subscriptions. I think those that left with a sour taste in their mouth about the failed promises, will continue to monitor the release calander and cryptic store items for anything worthy of attention. When that happens, well then maybe you'll just grab ahold of a bunny's ear.

Please only speak on things you know.
You know nothing on why I continue to play, your statement assumes I am disappointed and continuing to sub in hopes something better comes?
I'm happy, with my group of friends, well over 30 of us, Who Roleplay. Sure we're spread about different fleets, but we roleplay, pvp, pve, etc all together and enjoy yourselves.
That's why I continue paying.
Speak for yourself, not for me. You know, like, something you may actually be correct on.
All the games listed on Steam are just filler for any MMO player/fan. Now saying that .... I am not sure STO will survive and it sure can't survive with anything less than 100k subscribers ...remember some people paid $250 so they are done paying. MMO's survine on monthly subscribers. I like STO and I hope we can keep it going for a very long time.

I hope it survives as well. I don't see that happening, but one can always hope. I cancelled my sub so on the 6th of next month I won't be playing any longer but it would be nice to think that in a few years it might still be around with something more to offer than boring STFs. Like a great many others, I did everything the game had to offer in 3 weeks of casual play and in less than 6 weeks did it for 2 feds and 1 klingon so there is just nothing left to make it worth paying for. By not being new to MMOs I knew better than falling for the foolishness of buying a lifetime sub so I have an easy out. And any fanbois that try to say the numbers have not dropped drastically are just lying to themselves, it is obvious they have tanked and the reasons are many and clear even for those with the LT subs. People can try to flame the steam numbers or whatever they like if it makes them feel better, just don't expect any reasonably intelligent people to agree.
You ever wonder why the people who don't like a game always need to sing DOOM on every game forum? If I don't like chicken I don't walk around saying the chicken industry is doomed.

Well...Pardon my mistake I mean from this post here, it pretty much says you're a little concerned over subscriptions. Which is it? Yes you are concerned or no you aren't and you're satisified playing in a server with 100 admirals?

I used that as an example of past to give some info relevant to a topic. Just because someone provides a fact, does not mean they are passionate about it. people are talking subscription numbers falling, there's an example of rise and fall and rise again. nothing more. Just a food for thought.
You know...in the end...sudden change of heart.
I feel this way about both sides of this argument:
I'm a lifer and I certainly hope for the best but I'm not going to be playing every day if I'm bored. I've got plenty of other alternatives and I'm taking advantage of them.
I see my investment in STO as just that. There remains, in my eyes, huge potential here. Hopefully Cryptic's at least investing some of that lifer money into investments of their own that will help sustain them until they can develop the things STO needs. Those things are, I repeat myself out of habit, expanded Exploration, player crewed ships (or at least functional bridges for player crews), player generated content and fleet starbases.
This isn't going to happen overnight. It may not happen for a few years. STO needs to get on the stick though if they hope to retain non-lifers or lure skeptical Trekkers back to the game.
If it dies, it dies. I'll be sad. STO brings with it many good ideas which from now on will be seen as failures because of STO's other shortcomings. The good and the bad all seems to get lumped together out there when the post mortems are written.
At any rate, I'll be back to check on innovations as they show up. I'd suggest they get cracking on content more impressive than alternative bridges in the C-Store.
