I have only faced the Romulans once with my Nova Class Science Vessel (T2). On the ground, it wasn't so bad (though I've learned to kill the medics first).

In space, though, I am lucky I got out alive. That Romulan Warbird did things to me I couldn't even recognize. I nearly had my hull burned out from underneath me by Plasma fires while a tractor beam held me in place like a weenie over a camp fire. What is that purple haze that tags you and holds you perfectly still anyway?

And now it is time to face them again. Just one question:

How did you fight them...specifically, weapons, BO skills and anything else I may have missed?

What ships and weapons do I face...obviously plasma and disruptor...and what was that purple haze thingy again? Does it have a counter?

Any insights would be helpful.

Yeah, the Romulans were a challenge. Those Mogai Escorts are crewed by Romanian gymnasts, I swear.

The purple cloud is Viral Matrix. Currently, Science Team removes it. Soon, Engineering Team will (not sure if that's in addition to Science Team or in place of). Hazard Emitters are good to put out the plasma fires, and it gives you a HoT. Use Polarize Hull or Jam Sensors to shake off the Tractor Beam (or don't get too close. I believe TB has a range limit). In later tiers the D'deridex (the battleships) use Photonic Shockwave, which is annoying. (When you get to the Hirogen, they use Subnucleonic Beam as their opening shot. )

Target Subsystem - Engines is a good tactic against the big slow stuff. Stall them out and burn them up. As for weapons, whatever you do the most dps with. I've heard that Beam Overload is good, but I've never used it.

You can also avoid getting VM'd pretty easily. It has a 90 degree firing arc, so if you don't get in front of the ship, you won't get VM'd. And, of course, once you hit T3, you can VM him first

A useful thing against romulans is to shoot down the HY plasma torps, give them a quick blast. Or, if you have access to it from the right pre-order, the automated defense turret is great.

Hazard Emitters is a nice power when facing romulans as well. It heals your hull and will remove plasma DoTs.

Tractor Beam is typically just something to thank the Romulan for using. You're at his side, you've probably knocked that shield facing down, and he wants to keep you at that side. Well, if he really wants to make it easy for me to kill him, who am I to object?

Overall, I find Romulans pretty easy. Considerably lower dps than klingons. The only real pains are if you screw up and let yourself get VM'd or if a Romulan that is close to you manages to sneak a HY plasma torp through.

A perk for pre-ordering from the right place was access to a tactical console called the automated defense turret. This console is a plasma weapon that shoots at the closest hostile target within 3km. Even if it is stealthed or there's something in the way.

Overall, not worth the loss of a tactical console, especially in the higher levels, but PvE is easy enough and the consoles value low enough that in T2, it is great because you can just ignore plasma torps for the most part and let it deal with them.

If you purchased from the right place, you get it by going to the C-store, under the second tab. Same tab you use to get access to the khan and bloodwine emote, the T1 connie, and a variety of other such pre-order and/or buy the right version of the game from the right place stuff.

But if you didn't pre-order from the right place or didn't pre-order at all, then you're out of luck.

As a tactical escort captain T3 Current and a Brigadere General 5 Tactical Klingon I can say I love eating Romulans for Breakfast.

Federation Load Out T3

Plasma DHC X2 Quantaum Torp
Plasma Beam and Phaser Turret Rear
the Automated Defense Turret Console (Pre-Order)
Tac O runing HYT 1 CRF 2 Beam overload 1
Engi RSP and Repair Hull
Sci is running jam Sensors and Sci team

I usually Jam their Sensors then open up on them with the DHC's and Torps get two good vollies off and they are usually smoked before they can VM me which is fun to watch

The Romulans are really the first NPC ships you fight that actually use dangerous abilities. Escorts use Cannon:Rapid Fire, Battleships use Viral Matrix. All Romulan ships use High Yield Plasma torps like they're going out of style. It's normal that you're feeling a bit blindsided when you first fight them, since compared to your Klingon opponents in T2 they're much more aggressive and dangerous.

Battleships are pushovers if you've got sci team to counter their VM and reverse shield polarity or feedback pulse to bounce their beams back at them.

I find escorts to be more of a challenge, with their high maneuverability and cannons. I like to grab them with a tractor beam so I can just pound one shield facing down and put high yield torpedoes through it.

The answer to VM on battleships is Jam Sensors, which will make them just stop and sit there while you pound them.

The answer to plasma is Hazard Emitters.

For clarification. I assume your TAC above is your LT Cdr. Is this the skill layout in order?

Beam Overload 1, Torpedo: High yield 2, Cannon Rapid Fire 2.

Qhat is your second TAC running?

You SCI: Is the order Jam Sensors 1, Science Team 2? How do you fare without Hazard Emitters?

Why the Plasma Beam in the rear? I am learning that a single turret on the back of my Tier 2 rocks for forward shots, but my sides and rear are really weak defensively. Does this arrangement help?
