# 1 Space debris?
04-27-2010, 12:12 PM
First, why is there so much space debris in some sectors? Second, why is it so BIG? Almost every piece I see is larger than my ship, and I'm in a galaxy class. Where and what did this junk supposedly come from?

It came from park-in Starfleet space docks.

It forms from my hull in my 500,000 deaths, and uses the same instant gravity that holds them in place relative to the planet. Remember, this is a space game, physics and common sense does not apply.

Well, it certainly doesn't always apply in ST canon, that's for sure.

Hey, the ship's waste has to go somewhere, doesn't it?

Yep, but the waste isnt going to be bigger than the ship it comes from, and most of the debris in game is.

When you consider that over 400,000 ships have gone into the system to do the missions you see that the waste just builds together like the giant plastic island in the Pacific Ocean.

You see, that's where non-Euclidean physics come into play. I'd try to explain, but both of our heads will explode trying to comprehend the insanity-inducing geometry involved. :p

Supposedly, it's there to provide something to orient to and judge your movement against.

In rare instances, it's useful for momentary cover, but the number of cases where the NPC gets stuck and bugged on the terrain and where the enemy gains the advantage of cover that you don't both have outnumbered those in my experience.

Spontaneous generation of matter from the quantum vacuum flux slowly accretes onto the surfaces of the debris. Interaction of the quantum states of the newly generated matter with the EM particles we use to perceive it make it appear to be larger than it actually is.
