Would it be possible to implement a multi-targeting system?
For example, I'm captaining a Star Cruiser. While PvPing I have to focus on a target and on a friend since I'm playing a support.
I'd like to have an enemy target, and a "passive" friendly target. That way, when I fire offensive abilities, they go to the enemy. If I fire a healing ability it goes to my friend, unless he's too far away, or I unselect him so I can use it on myself.
We have powerful ships with powerful computers, I believe they could handle 2 targets.
For escorts, they could have a primary target, and a secondary. They'd fire at the primary until the target is destroyed, then automatically puts the secondary target as primary. Or, if the primary target uses jam sensors, cloak or gets far away, they shoot at the secondary until the primary target gets in range again.
I was considering requesting a variation on this. While in my Cruiser, I tend to stop moving and just shoot at my enemies. Sometimes they'll spawn little fighters, which flit around behind me and make nuisances of themselves. Not worth taking the time away from an actual threat to deal with them, but since I am not moving my rear phasers are doing nothing. It'd be nice if I could set them to just shoot at anything that is behind me. I don't even care if they don't stick to a target. Those little fighters will blow up quickly anyway. Just kind of silly that I've got phasers back there doing nothing while enemies are behind me. Can't I just order some Ensign to do target practice or something?
Personally, I find it odd that we can only target a single ship in the 24th century anyway. The F14 Tomcat can target at least half a dozen and any current naval vessel is capable of handling even more.
Multi-targeting is definatley a must, and this time Cryptic cant claim "engine limitation" since "Fire at will" already shows its possible to initiate a firing sequence on multiple targets.
I had suggested that fire at will be replaced with a passive ability (no activation, no cd) that your officer, using weapons assigned to him/her, would fire at tergets of opportunity (a fighter, heavy torpedo, or somesuch) that passed through through the weapons field of fire.
At the time of suggestion, you could only assign 1 fore/aft weapon as autofire, so part of the suggestion was also a weapon not designated as autofire.
This would also make for a nice cruiser-specific ability.
