It looks somewhat like that because the 3rd person view is common among video games. For most MMOs, 3rd person view works best for ground combat.

Well, the 3rd person camera is STO is largely due to the number of pets/boffs we have.

The appropriate question would be:
Why the ground part (ship and station) of STO DOESN'T look like this other StarTrek game?
3. person view, yet the ship interior scales seem OK.

The reason is because Cryptic is using the game engine from Champions Online for Star Trek Online and because of the pathing limitations and geometries of that engine interior areas must be large in order to allow characters to move around without getting 'stuck'. That's why the scale of everything is inflated beyond what you might see in other games or in the TV show.

That explains the wide corridors in STO. I don't have a problem with that. I don't want those NPC get stuck every minute.
But in that game, the ceiling level look OK. In STO, the interiors look like they were built by giants. Since NPCs can't fly (ATM) the ceiling height should not affect their pathfinding.
