# 1 beam target shield question
06-16-2010, 02:28 AM
is there someone that has tested this skill?
i'm levelling my first tac captain and i have a question:

during the time this skill is on can every beams shot affects the enemy shield or only the first beam shot can do this?

thanks to your answers

Target Shields 3 was the best tac/escort skill before patch 1.2.

It's the first beam (Dual Beam Bank or Beam Array) that hits the enemy and then reduces the target's shield power level. If you drain more power than the enemy has, then all his shields will collapse after some time, not instantly. I.e. I've skilled most of the abilities for TSS to max and had a -77 power drain which was more than enough for 95% of players in PvP and 100% of ships in PvE. The power level will regenerate so this is not a lasting effect.

Since patch 1.2 it's seldom used in PvP because it does not stack any more (when two player targeted the same ship and both had i.e. -60 drain, then their target was at -120 which meant no shields for a long time (until respawn).

I don't use it any more and have instead switched to Beam Fire at Will 3 and Beam Overload 3.

As far as being usefull, in the current game, TS: X dynamic!

well if you spec into it max and have the right consoles then -80 is as far as i have reached, for any drain, but the result is to reach zero and to do so means that with your power setting + efficiency skills + performance skills you have combat against.

Shields= it will be easy to take down escorts with this since the mostly run 25-35 shield power, 50-60 effective shield power due to skills. of course cruiser and science being a little to much resistant to the drain taking shields away.
say a ship has 72 eff shield rating and your drain is at 42, that means that you go to 30 shield rating. The lower the shield rating the lower the resist and regen of the shields and cant be maintained. so even though you dont shut down the shields to offline, you do enough to make it so thier shields cant act as a buffer.

Engines= this seems to be the best due to the fact you get that speed-defense bonus and with no speed or very low speed you dont get that extra protection. and getting in behind a ship that cant move is better to find a blind/weak spot to hide in to not take as much damage.

Aux= this isnt a bad alternative since most healing is now dependent on aux power and the lower the power the less you can heal yourself from.

i just consider weapons useless, but i guess the lower the weapon power the less dps they would do as if they had no weapon to fire.

Experience reflected below is for PvE.

I can't answer your question about beam shots, but I can tell you that BTSS and BTSE are two of the most effective skills I have ever used on both my escort and my science ship (I am using BTSX II in both instances).

With BTSS (or any variation) fully spec'd out (Sensors and Sensor Array, Beam weapons), 90% of the time, my first shot dropped the shield facing in front of me. Very shortly after that, all of his shields dropped and stayed down for 10-15 seconds (this is against most enemies. Borg have stronger resistances to lots of things).

With BTSE, I had a 30% chance of shutting down his impulse engines...ultimately happened in every engagement with most ships. He just stopped dead in space. With a defense rating of zero, it's far easier to pick him apart.

For myself, this is a must have skill for both my tac and sci ship. My tac exploits with lots of torpedoes while my sci exploits with spatial anomalies. Either way, this is an exceptional skill to have.

I've been using it lately and I really don't like it... In PVE it's great but it hardly ever takes down another players shields in PVP. I'm gonna swap it out for high yield III or fire at will III soon.
