This doesn’t actually surprise me that much, as last year when interviewing Jack Emmert about Champions, he talked about how it’s totally possible to make an MMO in 2 years – just not from scratch. He talks about lessons learned and knowledge, but here’s an interesting quote:
It is not strange at all. It is all part of a branding process.
Yeah but I doubt George Lucas is going to go and say "Well in Chronicals, Indiana Jones is just a padawan. He's a Jedi Knight by the time of Raiders of the Lost Ark. In the latest movie, Crystal Skull, it's essentially a retired Jedi Master leading a young padawan to glory. What do you mean I'm confusing two different franchises? Look buster, it's all a part of a branding process."
Not from the same developers but heres a few titles.
Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force(considered by many the best Trek game "ever")
Star Trek: Elite Force II
Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast
Jedi Knight 3: Jedi Academy
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
Call of Duty
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Soldier of Fortune II
You know what all these games have in common? They ALL used the "id Tech 3" engine or "modified" versions of it.
Quake 3 and Elite Force in fact use the same engine with no modifications, and people have even managed to load Q3 maps into EF.
So honestly, i can't see why people keep fussing about Cryptic using the same engine in multiple games.
