With the talk of possibly having the eventual rank of fleet admiral, I think it would be a good idea to open up a new aspect of the game once you have reached that level. How about when you reach the rank it opens up a RTS style sub game (like command and conquer or star trek armada, albeit slightly more simplistic) or if that's too much work the ships are represented by icons or 2D ships models.
You can still play the game normally but you start to collect a new set of xp points, instead of skill points.
These points are then spent building a fleet. You can pick what ships you want to add, how they are equipped. More powerful ships obviously cost more so you have to decide if you want to buy lots of small ships, a few bigger ships, or something in between. The same with weapons do you give all your ships weak weapons or load few with really powerful ones. Do you buy all escorts or all cruiser or a mixture.
The more you play the normal game, the more ships and equipment you can buy with the points to improve your fleet. There would probably have to be a limit on the total number of ships you could buy but I think it would open up a whole new area of endgame. You can also get to name your fleet, ie the fifth fleet or the ninety second fleet or whatever.
You can then send you fleet into battle against either the computer or other players and play using a RTS style game, where you can control their positions and movement. Even if that is still too much work or too complex to realistically add perhaps something like a turn based map, like seen in Risk or the total war games.
I know that might be a little out of left field and a actual RTS style game might be far to complex and time consuming to develop but it would be pretty revolutionary for an MMO. Controlling an entire fleet of dozens if not hundreds of ships would be amazing and would add yet another area of endgame to go alongside the possible UGC, open pvp sector blocks, etc..
What does everybody think. I'm I nuts or do you have your own ideas on how we could make a fleet admiral rank work, and be unique.
still i think what ever they do once we hit fleet admiral we must be able to control more than one ship in some sense and i love the idea of sending a huge fleet into battle, even if the gameplay mechanics are different to what we are currently doing
ok, i think its a bit far fetched... ok, REALLY far fetched... but i still think its awesome.
1, cryptic almost certainly wouldnt do it...
2, could you imagine how much server lagg there would be with 100s of people's fleets flying around?
3, it kinda is like a whole new game... i mean, i luv strategy games, but to integrate it into an mmo like STO would be completely revolutionary.
4, IF for some odd reason they attempted to do it, i think that the current STO universe is [dont get me wrong here...] too small. it only takes like, 2 minutes to cross the whole borg sector block. i just think adding fleets to the sector map would make the whole game look... teeny tiny. I mean, with all the fleets flying around, space would get kinda crowded.... maybe im wrong, but i just think that maybe they should hold off on the fleet thing at least untill they expand the sector maps more... make all the exploring users are doing really pay off by turning the border clusters into real space.
5, again, IF they did it, they had better make death carry a real consequence... im tired of popping 100 times, or watching my fleeties ram and self destruct an enemy, only to respawn 20 seconds later with no injuries... gets kinda old. I think that if your fleet ships pop, you would have to like, tow their carcasses back to a Starbase and get them repaired [it would make use of all those vacant dry docks seen orbiting ESD] or something to the like. Id luv to see real spaceports being used for just that. as Ports! for you ship's damages. this minor/major/critical injury system just doesnt seem to cut it.
i know its ambitious and its like developing a new game which they dont have time to do but it does not have to be too complex. much of the design work and backgrounds are already there in game.
there would have to be completely new areas opened up designed for the fleet fights to keep it separate from the main game but it would work similar to how it does now.
so your fleet moves around the sector like they do now but just showing the flagship but once you encounter an enemy it takes you to a large instances where the fight would take place. the lag should not be a problem as each instances is separate. or it could even work like the pvp queue.
its an idea, i think if it could happen or just something a bit smaller in scope it would be incredible but i suspect it wont come to pass. i just really like the idea of adding some RTS elements to an existing online game.
i really enjoy games like armada and homeworld but it gets a bit pointless after a while, but adding it to this game would for me create an entirely new level of gaming for endgame. once its there the ability to expand would also be limitless.
