Given that the Excelsior class made up the bulk of the fleet between the original series and Next Generation, it is almost criminal that they included ship classes from the original series, but not the Excelsior.

i would prefer it if they gave us enough ship slots to include ALL ship classes including the c-store bought ones, currently i would love to be able to equip each ship for specific roles but i have to choose between a few and you dont get a refund when you ditch and older model for a newer one.

or even a newer one for an older one.

Seeing that it's just a game.. I really don't see why we couldn't have our Miranda class refitted up to an Admiral ship.

The game is already set up and designed to use different skins for the same classes of ships... I would think it would be easier for the devs to just enable it to when you reach a Tier rank, you either claim your "free" ship, or "refit" your current. By doing the refit you choose the class of ship you want (keeping the Cruiser/Science/Escort models together) and the BO, console, and weapon slots are added to your old ship, and the stats for the upper tiered ship are carried over. Again, taking a point from another poster, clicking on a ship in PvP will display it's true rankl/class so there shouldn't be any severe confusion over what you are fighting against.

It's not canon, no.. for a Miranda to have say, three forward weapons, and three aft... but the movies and series don't always keep to canon... and the game already sure doesn't.

If they can mass produce the Galaxy X... I should be able to have a Tier 5 Nova..

Using the token to either get a new ship or refit an old one is the easiest option; however, crew compliement shouldn't increase as it would be defying the laws of physics.

And the Galaxy X is a refit of a galaxy, so technically, as Galaxy class numbers decrease, Galaxy class (refit) numbers increase (maybe with a few new builds, ala LNER A1/A3)

I think this is a great idea, this would also explain why some ships are so strong in the series (like Captain Kims uber Nova). When someone levels up it would be nice if the ship gets a little bit bigger, not very much, but just enough that one can see the difference.
This would nicely explain some size problems from the TV series.

To make this concept complete i would love to be able to mix ship parts (you know Hulls, Nacelles, Pylons, Necks) of different tiers (lets say only cruiser can use cruiser parts, only escorts can use escort ship parts, and so on).
And it would even be greater if it would be possible to Increase/Decrease the size, and to strech them around 15-25 % in every axis.
All of this would only be cosmetic

Unfortunately, ship parts are solid items with specific action interactions set into them (such as "Phaser from 2XYZ; Torpedo from x, -1y and -2z). Stretching them would make them look odd during fights.

Since i am not a game Designer/programmer i cannot tell anything about this, but i am sure cryptic has some clever guys who could solve this problem with some creativity, if they wanted to.
This would be actually one of my favs. because certain designs are just unproportional and ugly in my eyes so streching and size altering to a certain degree would do wonders.

What if ships from lower tiers gained "refit slots" as you gained rank. So if I'm still running in my Miranda-class ship at Commander, I would have two refit slots. These would be similar to console slots except they can only be changed at a starbase, and they have a hefty cost to add.

An example would be something like "reenforced hull" which provides a boost to hull strength, or "improved warp core" to boost power levels. There might even be extra slots for weapons/consoles. Some things would not be upgradable, such as crew compliment, (let's face it, you just not going to cram any more people into that tiny ship) or overall mass/inertia. (A galaxy class will always be a monster.)

A refit ship will never be as powerful as it's modern counterpart, but the point of the system is to make the difference minimal. The other advantage is that it will give the player more customizability. Want an escort with better shields, sure if you're willing to give up the extra weapons slots of the T5.

The best part is that it opens up possibilities for story driven refits. Say for instance there was a mission to steal a Romulan cloaking device, or your ship get's enhanced with borg technology.

* Science ships would be limited to science, cruiser to cruisers, etc.
* The ship customization UI would be modified slightly. A drop down showing all ship tiers you have access to opens up, and you can select a tier. Hate the tier 3 science ships? Choose tier 2, and make your customization selections from those normally available to tier 2 science ships.
* Bought a ship skin on the C-Store? Those become available in the general category they fall under at the appropriate rank. Future ship skin/costume releases on the C-Store should be available to lower ranks (Excelsior and Ambassador come to mind).
* Biggest PRO - this system is already mostly in place. Far less work for the devs to do to make it happen. (from my armchair dev point of view)

* Special unlock ships (TOS Connie and Galaxy-X at the current time) are ineligible. Any future special unlocks would also be ineligible.
* To allay the fears of PvPers, clicking on your target will show the ship type (assault cruiser, advanced escort, etc.,). The way PvP is gated, you know automatically that the guy in the Connie Refit is within 5-10 levels of you, within the same rank.

Honestly, while they willl likely introduce a few designs already ingame with higher tier stats, this is probably the best way to go. It should be far easier to implement new ships this way, especially lower tier skins.

I really like your idea.
A nice side effect woud be that people actually had to look at what exactly they are shooting at. (this would be another small butr nice part additional immersion.)

We can only hope that someone from Cryptic is reading this Thread and considers our ideas.
I can only speak for myself, but i love to customize everything thats possible, and these ideas here in this thread would open some new dimensions of ship designing.

The problem with this is that then we would have tier 2 Novas being as powerful as Tier 5 ships, which is not appropriate.
