The idea has been mentioned before, I supported it then and I support it now! except before when it was purposed it was early into launch. I do not even think there should be a requirement, If you need help you should be able to send a signal.

If I was in the neighborhood I would answer!

I gree with this. it would be a handy feature.
for me it would be helpful when doing missions on advanced or elite (died 26 times in a row. shot once each time by one of the Lt.s in the first group)

I like it too. Perhaps there could be repair stations as well. Like the one we saw in the ENT episode Dead stop. And either it was perhaps just a repair station, not like the one in that episode that kidnapped your cew members and replaced them with dead lookalikes. Or perhaps it WOULD do so, and there would be a mission surrounding it, in this case exactly what the ENT crew went through in that episode, and you'd have to figure out how to solve it like they did.

The only thing I don't like about this is having your ship sitting idly there, not being able to move until someone (if it happens) responds to your distress call. Could it be like dying in other MMO's, you can choose to either have your ship be destroyed and respawn, or for someone to come along and "resurrect" you.

And, I'm guessing a distress call is a last resort. I mean, can't the distress call do exactly the opposite of what is intended. You let someone know you're a sitting duck, and having than render aid they can come pillage your ship, then take strip it and sell the parts, and sell the crew into slavery.

It would be a really neat feature if you could make a distress call while in a mission. Doing so would place an icon on the sector map indicating that someone is requesting help in a particular system. People flying around in sector space would see the icon while flying by, and could offer assistance. Once a player flew to the system, they'd be given the option to enter the system normally, or "Respond to Distress Call." Selecting that option would bring the player into the same instance as the player who made the distress call, and they'd automatically become part of a team.

In order to prevent everyone from just clicking "Send Distress Call" as soon as they enter a level, a threshold could be set for when the function becomes active. (Something like, you have to die 3 times before you can make a distress call, or something.)

Thoughts?
This is an excellent idea! I think it would make the game more immersive and give it more of an "I'm part of the big Starfleet (KDF) family" kinda feel.

I would give me a little something extra to do at VA and also help build the community.

I like this idea alot from an immersion view point its excellent and realistic, and heck its just plain old neato!
Though i'd suggest you can call for aid from the first/ possibly second time you die but obviously would then be able to continue the mission until you complete it or help arrives to help you complete it.
Also i'd add in few extra accolades just for a fun little thing ( I Do love me some accolades xD)

Accolade 1: My Hero - Respond to 10 Distress Calls
Accolade 2: Your not a ferengi are you? - Send 10 Distress Calls
Accolade 3: Space is a lonely place - Have 5 Distress calls ignored (I.E no player comes to help you)
