Will we be able to designate who our first officer, chief medical officer and chief engineer will be after we have playable ship interiors?

If someone already asked this question then Im sorry for asking again but I could not find it anywhere!

Very common player request. Devs haven't directly commented on designating stuff like 'Chief Medical Officer' or 'Chief Engineer' before, to my knowledge.

However, they have said that they're looking at doing something with a First Officer position in the past. But they've never said what or when; it's entirely possible they haven't even decided yet.

I know what you're looking for is an actual mechanic. But setting up a rank structure with your bridge officers from an RP standpoint is easily done.

My "first officer" is a Vulcan science officer, showing the rank of Commander. My heads of security are a Bolian consultant who displays no rank, as he's not a member of Starfleet (from a story standpoint anyway) and a Denobulan (created from an Alien BO) LtCmdr.

Having all of the rank pips available no matter the actual rank goes a log way to RPing your crew rank. I myself display the rank and title of Captain, since I'm not a fan of having so many Admirals running around.

Also: If you want them to appear in the away team list by rank while planetside, rearrange the Standard Away Team list to reflect their rank.

The problem with that is the placement on the bridge. My first officer is a Vulcan science officer too, I once got the idea to fly a science ship, so I could actually put her into the commander-slot. When I went to my bridge, my tactical officer was on the place of the first officer. Now I'm planning to let my XO do the same like Sulu and Tuvok and change to tactical on my escort. I'm pretty sure she's going to sit at the helm....

By the way, I'm now proudly displaying my admiral rank. I don't see the point of wearing captain pips when everybody calls me specifically "Rear Admiral, Lower Half!" and the whole ESD is swarmed by admirals.

yeah, bridge placement has always been one of the things that bugs me. It's the main issue with the way I have my crew set up. Though, my science officer is always at a science terminal, which is where Spock was during ToS even though he was first officer. So I can see it making sense. Though, on bridges that have no extra seats beyond the captains chair and consoles, it's not really an issue.

I've actually seen some NPCs that call you by your chosen title in Season 2. During one of the diplomat missions I had my Ambassador title showing and they addressed me as Ambassador Zek, another I had my captain title on and they called me Captain Zek, Zek being the characters chosen last name, which was cool that they used that and not just inserting in the display name. We know they can do it, I just wish they would implement that as a standard.

That's interesting.... My character displays the "Special Envoy"-title and was always called by his diplomatic rank in the diplomatic missions.O_o

It can be done. The problem is that all the dialogue in the old and existing missions uses a substitution field...{player_rank} or something like that. So it pulls the appropriate character rank and inserts it into the dialogue.

Thing is, the coding for level-restricted items in the game also uses the exact same text field. As do other non-dialogue bits of text and code in the game.

This means they can't simply do a find-and-replace. Either they need to sort the database before replacing, or someone needs to manually go through all occurances of the existing rank reference tags and change them.

It'd be great to have Cryptic actually do something about this. For those of us that like to "Flesh-out" our BOffs we can easily assign first officer, cmo, chief engineer, etc. However to actually have some type of mechanic introduced would be nice.

Check out the Massively interview with Stahl posted earlier today:

With the steady increase to player ranks in the game, what's going to happen with bridge officers perpetually stuck at commander as their top rank?

We do have a plan about that -- we've been looking at a lot of forum suggestions on this. There are a lot of ideas that we like, and there are two that we really like and are going to be working on for the future. One is promoting your bridge officers to specific seats within your ship -- first officer, chief medical officer -- allowing them to have specific duties and responsibilities that give them certain abilities and traits. We love that idea.

The other is once you're a vice-admiral, being able to take bridge officers that you've sort of promoted under your wing, and make them their own character[s]. You've made a character the first officer, and you can say "you know, I want this guy to have his own unique crew" -- and we love the idea that you can then open up a new character slot, and now you can play that character with his own ship and his own crew. We see that as a great idea and something to work on the future.

We'd also love to work on things like having away teams in space, where a vice-admiral could have a couple of his "minor" captains following him around. For the short term, though, it's really going to be about positions and converting bridge officers to playable characters.

That has actually opened up a lot of ideas. There are certain bridge officers that you can't just create -- like, for instance, Liberated Borg. Or a Gorn -- if you find a Gorn bridge officer, if we put those other systems in place, you can go through the work to promote him and give him his own ship, and now you have a playable Federation Gorn captain. It takes a lot to get that, but you get something very distinctive.

See the new post with Dan Stahl talking to Massively... in it he says that this is one of two big things they are looking at you being able to do with your bridge officers. Also promoting them to Captain, giving them their own ship and having a mini "fleet" with you for missions.

Hopefully this means in Season 2.1, 2.2 etc. or 3.0 we will see this. =D
