I think the ships & charaters should be unlocked from each other.

This would allow high ranked charaters to fly whatever tier level of ships they want to.

And bridge officer type slots & console slots should be based on charater rank, not ship types. This would be a natural blaance to the game.

( Example)

Your charater is Tatical officer. as this charater moves up in rank they are allowed a max number of bridge officer type slots. Independent from the type or tier level of the ship you want to use in the game.

This would also be done to weapon & consoles slots. The higher your rank the more Bridge officer, Weapons slots, Consoles slots, you can use. So they are NOT tied to your ship type or tier.

This should be easy to do in game and this would allot everyone to fly the ship they want and have that ship play the role in the game they want it to.

Take the Galaxy X is a Dreadnought Cruiser. With this idea. You can turn it into any ship type you want. Maybe you want a Dreadnought tatical ship. Well all you would have to do it assign more bridge officers and more weapons to your ship. That number would depend on how much rank your charater has and how many bridge officer & wepons & consoles slots you have earned the right to use.

It's a bit late in the game to bring this up. You are proposing a near complete system rewrite. This was discussed before even closed beta. It makes some sense, I agree, but they made the decision to not do it that way as a general form of progression. Perhaps they would do it to a limited degree down the road but I doubt they will completely rework the whole game system to put it in as "the" way of ship progression.

This is not about ship progression, it's about Charater progression and the freedom of your charater to fly what ever ship you want at any rank in the game without limits.. - OOP

I know it is about character progression. What you are doing here is trying to tie ship progression to character progression together, whether you realize it or not. You are melding the two. You are attaching the "inner workings" if the ships to the "capabilities" of a character effectively making that character part ship as is currently defined by STO. Cryptic said no to that idea a long time ago. They want the ships and characters to be completely separate, to be items.

I'd love to be able to keep my Nova as I rank up and still have her be competitive, but I'm not sure if this would actually be implemented...

We can dream though.

Nothing new, folks have suggested this quite a few times before. I've suggested that they just sell a skin change to any previous tier of the same type of ship.

Once you rank up if you wanted to keep your new sci ship looking like your old Nova you'd buy the 'tier skin', all it changes is the look, everything else is whatever the new ship is.

Weapons, crew, handling, etcetera all like the new tier ship but looks like your old. With holo emitters in game I see no reason this can't be done.
