I think it's pretty safe to say that the majority of players are very happy with the Refit / Retrofit ships currently available, but I think it's also safe to say that there are a lot of us who would really like to retrofit some of the other older ships.

Admittedly it takes time to QA new abilities and special functions for the ships; but in the interim it would be nice if we could, once we find a ship that we absolutely love, choose to have it level with us.

I suppose the easiest way would just be to have the ship increase its hull / shield capacity as well as console and BO slots with every rank up, but the fun way would be for us to head back to ESD (or even Utopia Planetia, once its available) and pay EC or Starfleet Merits to a quartermaster to have the ship upclassed or retrofitted to have superior hull / shields, more bridge stations, more consoles, etc. Maybe even toss in a little animation of the ship in one of the spacedocks with the little worker bees zipping around it replacing hull plates, shield arrays and/or deflector arrays. (OK so that would take some doings, but it would still be neato. ^.^)

Then as time permits, additional special retrofits (Akira Carrier Gunships, Olympic class with funny looking saucer seps, Cheyenne with slightly less humorous saucer seps, etc.) could be added to the game as separate vehicles.

=edit=

In the case of science ships and escorts, retrofitting them up to Fleet escort / DSSV levels would not be out of the question, as they are already lightly armoured and armed. In the case of extremely low tier cruisers like Mirandas or Vespers, they could be upgraded as cruisers up to a point but from that point on, the only viable upgrade would be manoeuvrability and armament; effectively turning it into an escort. (Advanced RCS thrusters, better engines, etc. Obviously this would not be an efficient use of resources, but it would be the star Admiral's prerogative to do what she liked with it. (Since we are playing what amounts to a single player game with thousands of other people also playing the same single player game.)

So it would be unfortunate that the early cruisers could not be upgraded to battleship standards, but there is no reason they could not be turned into an equivalent escort. Manoeuvrable, lightly armoured and heavily armed.

In regards to the Nebula not being battleship material, I disagree. In size and functionality it is very similar to the Galaxy; not only that, it has additional weapons located in the sensor pod (Seen in at least one episode firing torpedoes from both the engineering hull and the pod above the saucer.) I see no reason its hull and shields could not be beefed up to Tier 5 Galaxy standards.

I vaguely seem to remember from one of the first looks at STO (back before Cryptic took-over development of the game) that this was exactly how ships were going to progress. Instead of doing a mad-rush to buy the biggest-and-baddest ship, a person could instead stick with their older ship for a while. Their crew would become more proficient with the ship, squeezing-out better power and running more efficient than they would be in a completely new ship. Eventually you would probably need to step-up to a new ship (an Excelcior-class Starship will never be as powerful as a Sovereign-Class Ship) but for a little while, your crew would be operating at reduced efficiency since they were learning a new ship.

Even after you maxed-out an older ship's efficiency numbers, they still wanted to have a way to keep older ships from being completely obsolete, although how exactly hadn't been ironed-out yet.

Needless to say, whatever mechanics the original developer had in mind no-longer exist now in the current incarnation of the game.

I'm not comfortable with the idea that a Constitution-Refit should be on par with a Sovereign-class starship.

Granted, I've my share of favorite ships. I really love the Vesper-class - haven't love another ship design more than that one, to be honest - and while I regret not being able to fly in it anymore and being competitive... somehow, that seems fitting to me.

The ship retrofit added three fan-favorites to the endgame Fed ship configuration lineup - and we have 2 more coming with the Excelsior and maybe also the Nebula. But I'm growing concerned that the retrofit fever might be going, ah, too far.

Yeah, I have to agree. The Connie is my favorite ship, but it's pretty old by not, and not really a ship the Federation would sent into a War zone. It's more of a ship that they would send to explore, etc, etc, etc. The Excelsior is kinda pushing it too, the Nebula is a Cruiser, but still, it is not really a military vessel.

Though, I would like to see more variety of Federation ships. If Cryptic and/or the fans could find a way to give the Connie a fighting chance while still keeping in canon boundaries, it would be fine for me.

Overall, I like that they're giving the Feds more variety, I can't wait till the day I go into PVP and I see starships of every shape and size.

Yeah, that would be the day. Until they find a way though, I would like a few GOOD ships, than a bunch of crappy ones.

I dont get it, their just skins, does it realy matter what ships people are flying?

This isnt real, and this game is based on cannon it isnt cannon. Plus, my star cruiser is a brand new starship class, and should out perform the ageing sovereign class but it doesnt.

Are you suggesting that, since it makes absolutely no difference what the ships look like, we should just drop everything to wireframe or sprites?

I admit it would increase performance, but I'd rather have something nice to look at.
