# 1 New character class: MACO
08-15-2010, 09:30 AM
I picked up a cop of the star trek online novel the needs of the many a few days ago. It's a pretty decent book. It is written as a collection of news interviews of various characters from the star trek universe, some you are familiar with, some you are not. It is set in the year 2423 after the long war, or the undin war, has supposedly ended. The first character to be interviewed was Paul Stiles, a retired master sergeant of the Military Assault Command Organization (MACO). I'm not going to give away any spoilers, but his interview detailed his account of a boarding operation of an undine ship. It must have something to do with me being in the army, but I really liked this character. I have to ask this question, since this book was written with the help of cryptic studios, are we going to see a playable MACO added to the game? I have a few ideas of how the MACO could be added and I think the Federation could use benefit from having MACOs in the game.

As a playable character it would have to be a sub class that would look something like this:

Assault: your basic front line marine. Has special abilities that center around combat like ambush, CQB, assault, and defense. They should also be able to use mortars since that is a job that the infantry does.

Sapper: MACOs engineer, but more combat oriented. Special abilities would be more along the lines of creating and destroying obstacles, emplacing and removing booby traps and mines, using various devices to cover movement, and build or breech defenses.

Corpsman/combat medic: much like the marines today have a navy medic assigned to their platoons, the MACO could have a Starfleet medic assigned to their platoons. His job would focus on healing his squad and providing buffs to improve their performance in combat.

Players would start at the rank of 2nd lieutenant. They would progress through the ranks through 1st lieutenant, captain, major, colonel, and general.

The uniforms would consist be combat fatigues with some kind if adaptive camo. With the option to have a dress customizable dress uniform and an off duty uniform.

Standard issue equipment would be the TR-116, an energy dampening grenade, and a bladed weapon similar to today's k-bar or maybe something like the sword sulu used in the last star trek movie.

Some of you are probably asking what a TR-116 is. According to the novel, it is the weapon of choice for the MACO. The best way to describe it is to give an excerpt from the book. This is not a spoiler.

"<sisko> Would you mind describing the TR-116?
<Stiles> The TR-116. My sweetheart. It's a piece of old-school warfare technology. The TR-116 is a rifle that Starfleet developed for use in high-radiation environments that would criple a phaser. Or against enemies like the Jem'Hadar, or the Borg -- a foe with the ability to shield itself from directed-weapons. But instead of firing a collimated energy beam, theme TR-116 use an internal chemical explosion to launch metal projectiles, either one at a time or in rapid-fire mode. We called it the T-Rex for short because it was a technological dinosaur. And because it was loud, not to mention scary as hell.

<Sisko> I remember someone going on a killing spree decades ago aboard Deep Space 9 using one of those things.
<Stiles> so you know how effective a weapon like that can be, even in the age of the phaser. The TR-116 can shred nearly any solid enemy with a lethal hail of ballistic micromissiles. It can even fire through most material barriers without so much as much as scratching the paint on the walls, thanks to itscomputerized targeting system and micro transporter built into the barrel."

The US Army has it's own ships, so I don't believe it's unreasonable for the MACO to have it's own ships as well. They could have light cruisers, escorts, and maybe even constitution class ships modified for boarding operations and assault.

Alternatively the MACO could be incorporated into the game as a special ability. Instead of the shuttle boarding party, there could be a MACO boarding party. The book described the MACO boarding operations as using modified escape pods that would attach to the enemy hull and the marines would cut through the hull and board the enemy ship.

I've always believed the security detail special ability has been mostly useless only giving the enemy more targets to shoot at. This could be improve with a detail of MACOs that beam down with their TR-116s cause massive damage to two or there enemies, an then bean up when they run out of ammo.

At the very least, I would like to see the TR-116 implemented into the game. It would be a welcome addition and would be of great help when dealing with some of those stronger enemies like elite tactical drones. It should be given an ammo count that takes like two three minutes to recharge to keep a player from having an unfair advantage.

Tell me what you guys think of my idea.

If you want a MACO, just wait for the upcoming MACO uniforms and select appropriate skills on your tactical officer.

To the OP, this topic has come up and up, and while I don't think there should be a class dedicated to it, perhaps specialized kits, but not a full class, I do agree that there should be uniform options, and such for the players who want to play this type of character.

This subject has already made several people lose their minds. The TR-116 is available in game as stated above. Many feel MACO was absorbed by Starfleet, others just hate it out of their hippy like reading of Gene's vission, others feel that anything at all from the ENT series should be considered the anti-canon, etc.

I do like the idea of playable boarding actions either assault or defense. Someone male it so.

MACO=obsolete, SF officers are well trained for combat operations in extreme conditions, as for STO tactical suited perfectly for ground operations.

Yes, basically. There were no maco's present in star trek past Enterprise. Fact.

Starfleet Security personnel have replaced maco's.

Didnt feel like I needed to type all of this out because honestly I thought any trekkie would no this automatically.
