# 1 Running Away In Combat
09-09-2010, 01:50 PM
Sorry is this has been discussed before. Just curious to see what people think. Your in space pvp match your battering your opponent, there almost dead and then they run away with engine batteries, or evasive manoeuvres etc.

When it happens to you do you think its smart game play or just find it annoying as hell. Do you do it yourself or do you always stay and fight.

I am of the belief that anything goes in pvp, you do what you have to to win but every time I see someone running way its bugs the hell out of me.

Discuss.

In short I use it, and i find it annoying ashell when my own evasive is down. There is a honorable mention to a famous fed (without naming him) but hes damn good at running but not so much at the other stuff.

What im saying is be smart your dying have 10 ppl shooting at you and 5 seconds of rsp left and your on 40% hull and evasive manouvers are up... wanna die or run?

I do use it at times, not too often though. I find it sort of useless in Capture and Hold matches, if you're in a really bad shape it makes more sense to respawn as fully heled - unless it's a real tight battle.

About this:

It's exactly what keeps PvP numbers so low. A little bit of sportsmanship would be a good idea - mind you, it doesn't mean losing.

It's smart gameplay, fair to use, and can be very annoying if you are on the "receivent" end. I use this appraoch with my Defiant all the time, and I even got hate-tells for that. Meh. If you want me to just sit and take it, be creative with the available BO powers, not just with your insults.

It depends. Sometimes, you can draw people away from the main fight by running. It's dangerous to do, but if an escort and a Cruiser hunt after you, you can keep them busy for quite some time.

I just can't see running away as bad sportsmanship. But it might just be one of those nebulous terms that everyone will define for himself. I see bad sportsmanship more in people that throw around insults and create a hostile social atmosphere. I think that indicates it has gone beyond sports and play and is getting personal. If both sides have agreed to such behavior, I wouldn't see it as a problem. The implicit agreement in participating in PvP for me is that everyone uses all the abilities allowed in the game. (Even if they are OP, actually. I can choose to not use OP stuff, but can't expect others to do it. I would expect the game creator to fix such issues, though). I do not see an implicit agreement for being insulted.

After PVP ing in the past 2 months as a Klingon BOP pilot, I have been trying out my FED Commander in his escort in a few PVP matches.
Those Darn Klinks! Always running away! Is what I found myself saying. And I was steamed that they were much better at escaping than I was as a BOP pilot.
So much to learn.
I feel that it is a valid tactic that you have to deal with and you would be a fool to not use everthing at your disposal to win a match. If you have to run to deny an enemy a kill, thats what you do.

I run away because I don't use RSP. Fair trade-off?

I see nothing wrong with running away. Lighter ships like escorts and BOPs can't stand up to much thus they are quick....which means they can escape when in trouble. Its part of the game.

Granted, I hate when I'm shooting at an almost dead escort and he zooms out of range with 2% hull left, but I would never talk smack about it. I can't stand when people complain about a perfectly viable strategy. To me that falls into the same category as people who complain when they fly alone into a group of 5 enemy ships and after they die they say something like "haha cowards it took 5 of you to kill me".

Running away may not be the best strategy in a cap. and hold situation, but nonetheless its a part of the game and it is completely fair.

Id have to say he's the best lol but if you catch him you've done something....

But to the question I dont call it running I call it playing my ship to its best tactical advantage I fly a BoP and
thats what it is made for Hit & Run so I look at it like this, If it P#$*^# my opponent off and they talk smack
then Im doing my job right.

Its like Patton said (Dont die for your country (Faction) Make the other poor SOB die for his)
