# 1 Direction of STO & Factions
09-19-2010, 07:56 PM
Greetings,

I posted this idea on another thread in general talk, about listing out thoughts in short, mid, and long term goals we would like to see in STO. The section below, is from the mid section, and is as follows:

Bring on another Faction - Yes I agree that the Klingon faction lacks content compared the the Federation. Yes, I would like to seem more content. But, I have heard rumours that it will take up toward a year and half to get the Klingon side up to standard with the federation. Even looking at where we are, over half a year later since launch.

Personally, I would suggest brining on other factions so that they simply exist as a PvP faction. Yes, each faction would be lame, federation excluded...but at least each faction could be played, and those who are hard-core fans of a certain race could take the time to upgrade in pvp to admiral ranking, while the rest of us play occasionally. I guess the point is, there are several people I have talked to who want a certain race to have their character in for RP (Role Play) purposes, and have either not gotten an STO subscription because of this, or will be quitting until one comes out.

Further, I would suggest that each race being brought into existence only start with two uniform option to keep design developers schedules free to keep the factions coming. One classic as seen in the Star Trek Series, and one new uniform for 2409. As for ships, same thing. One classic science, cruiser or escort which gets bigger and stronger every rank up. As time goes on, more ships and costumes can be added, but that would get most fans through.

I'm curious to what players feedback on this might be?

The idea is not to subtract from content being added to the Klingon faction. Rather it would allow a very simple version of each faction, for those interested in RP, PvP, and novelty sake. PvE content would primarily go the the Klingon faction until par with the Federation faction, and then move onto the third faction until at par with the rest, and so forth.

However, that idea is neither here, nor there, rather I want to focus your thoughts to whether you think bringing on a couple skeleton factions would be a good idea, if agreed that the PvE content would primarily go the Klingon faction in season updates, with say a new race (Skeleton version) being added every 1/2 year to a year, if able by the developers?

Thoughts...

Well, lets ask it this way:

Hey, dedicated Klingon players! How do you like being a PvP faction (what you were billed as at launch)?

Do you feel you're being treated equivocally and getting the game play options you paid for or were promised?

Whatever answers are given to that should pretty much tell you how people who would join for a new faction which is PvP centered will feel.

Considering the Kligon Faction was suppose to be PvP oriented, I am not dissapointed. Yes I do think that all not Fed factions should be simple until all the major powers in the galaxy are represented. Then the time can be taken to bring them up to par with the Federation Faction.

Personally I rather see a faction really fleshed out rather then a half assed attempt that is only half done. If you try to be everything you'll likely fail at everything, however if you specialize at one point first and make that really well then you have something to build from after that.

I also have second thoughts as to how popular a third faction would be, especially when the current 2 can use a lot more content to begin with. Federation and Klingons are by far the most popular sides and from developer point of view it'd make more sense to focus on making those 2 really good before taking on additioinal work.

Personally I strongly believe that if you can't do something justice you shouldn't do it at all.

It may keep peple happy in the interm. But it could also upset a large amount of folks too. Does not hurt to try it I guess.

hmmmmmm.... For what it is worth, I would prefer that all factions in game get fleshed out equally (relative word there I know) before adding another one.

With that said, for me personally as a hard core Romulan fan, I would be happy with just ships, toons and a PvP system. Given the bulk of the new content coming out is going to be faction neutral I think it would be doable to be frank.

I like Cryptic's original idea regarding factions. Star Trek is about the Federation. The Klingons, the Romulans, the Borg, etc... are villians. Therefore, most canon information we have is about the Federation. Most story content should be for the Federation faction, with all other "villain" factions being PvP centric. I have a Klingon character that I like to play, but I don't want to be a Klingon because I care about experiencing a new Klingon story line or mission arc. I just want to fly all the Klingon ships, and blow things up! Like Klingons do! :-) I think the addition of any other villain factions, as far as I'm concerned anyway, would be so that I could fly those ships as well. I'd really like to be able to kick some butt with a Romulan Warbird.

If I had to pick a release order it'd be :

Romulans
Cardassians
Dominion
Undine

Gets old quick doing the same thing over and over and over...
Fans of the KDF play the KDf for the same reasons fans of the Romulans will play Romulans, to see thier favorite faction come to life in a MMO instead of being the monster lurking in the background.

At first NO, then a little better as we got a few scraps of aditional fleshing out, but overall not what diehard KDF fans feel thier monies have gone into STO for. I persoanlly bought a lifer in the hopes that STO would become an large and fleshed out MMO with mulitple factions. The recent SOG is a good move in that direction, but remains to been seen if the definition of more fleshed out meshes with the KDF fanbase ideas or sets a good benchmark for future factions.

I still feel that STO will be best grown to represent all the fans of the 40+ year genre and not just the federation with trickle down pve content, such a fully fleshed game will best take advanatge of the revenue possibilities the IP has proven it can bring in in the long run.
