That would be damn cool - It would be great if we could mix and match ship parts too..

Surely all they need are the ship models, although I don't know whether cryptic would allow that?

I've wanted these for STO ever since i heard about WoWs version of them, it'd be freakin' amazing and horrifying at the same time as i know i'd end up spending WAY too much money on them.

Unfortunately it seems only the massively popular games with a heap of financial backing like Spore and WoW seem to do them.

printing part is easy... its coming up with a closed 3d model thats the hard part.

WizKids is doing this for their Star Trek board game coming out. But they are sticking to hard canon for ship figures.

Pretty much this. I'd probably wind up getting four ships total (my primary and secondary ships for each of my two characters), plus a dozen or more crew models (my two toons and most of my BOs).

*shrug* Paramont probably retains rights to any models/sculptures/action figures/statuettes. So it would have to be through them directly, in all likelyhood.

However, I'd love to have a few of my characters done!

the only problem I see with this is that very few people actually have unique avatars or ships, STO doesn't have the kind of customization Spore has.

I don't consider this much of a problem. WoW has less customisation and it has figureprints like Spore's, all they really are is armour showcases. It's more about the attachement to your character rather than whether they look like someone elses. It may not be unique, bit it IS yours.
