I would like this, but again, you have to remember that a Mr. Riker refused to be a Captain for YEARS, and finally became one at the end of Nemesis. The idea of having a "Class Specialization" is a neat idea, but they would also have to give us an (ingame) way to be able to go back and be the other specialization. Because you can demote yourself and become a lower rank.

I DID hear somewhere that Cryptic was looking into the ability to make your BoFF into NPC Captains, and you can take them with you in missions. I hope they do it, because you would FEEL like an Admiral rather than a Captain with dress for a Uniform.

Id like to dump 2 of my officers into my old rank 3 ships and be able to form a task force of a sort.

They would function ezactly the same as ground, but in space, little follow, attack, passive, stop icons and all.

Maybe even impliment a level and perk system for them where they have to progress from a miranda onwards like the pc did

Or... on some future episode have us admirals do something to go in against starfleet like Kirk did when he got demoted to captain again.

Would be interesting i think.

That is EXACTLY what I propose!

Role-playing-wise, it is cool. And we have seen in Star Trek that certain Captains can be even more influential than Admirals (Picard readily comes to mind: in First Contact he just showed up during a fleet engagement and took command of the whole fleet, almost certainly bypassing whoever was second in-command of the fleet).

As for the game mechanics, it introduces class specialization, which is something we don't really see in STO. Why do I have to go for a tac-sci-eng division for my entire career? Tac could break into Tactitan (Fleet Captain) or Strategist (Admiral), for example, with different skills.

I was talking about in canon. The only canon Fleet Admiral / CnC we ever saw was during the Kirk years.

Fleet Admiral Morrow
Fleet Admiral "Bob"
Fleet CnC in the Praxis meeting that sent Kirk to escort Kronos 1 to Earth.

After Star Trek VI (in canon) we never saw another Fleet Admiral or CnC. They probably existed, we just never saw him/her on screen.

But there would still be only one Fleet Admiral. Command structure always ends with one perrson.

solution

make levels numerical like every single other mmo

as you level you unlock rank titles

you are whatever rank that you choose to use as rank title, npcs call you by it, doesnt do anything to gameplay otherwise, same as it is now.

shuts all the whiners up

problem solved

Perhaps thatís not a bad idea, but I think I have another way of earning ranks, you know when completing an accolade you get points that (I don't think) do anything, perhaps if you earned enough of them point THEN you earn the next rank title and pips.
For example you could level up a character all the way to 51 but you've only completed 10 or so accolades and can only have the rank of Lieutenant.

I'm sorry but just "unlocking" ranks is not enough in my Opinion.

I agree. Not only am I seeing much to many admirals, not only do I not want to be one, commanding a starship is simply neighter an Admirals Job nor a Lieutnants Job, it is a CAPTAINS job, and it is not important if it is a Miranda or a Souverign.

The only exeption we ever saw was Commander Sisko in Command of the Defaint in season 3 (and may be Worf who labled himself as "Commander of the Defaint" in season 5; but he was still under Captain Siskos "Control"), but at that time the Defaint was still an unfinished prototype, and until the end more an "Add on" to the Station, like Runabouts, not an independet operating starship.

(permanantly) commanding a Starship = CAPTAIN. Not Admiral. Not Ensign. Captain. So that Rank should be available from Lvl 1 to 100, as long as we ARE Commanding Starships.
Other Ranks should be optional for RP purposes, but thats it.

Real history doesn't agree with you. Most officers have commanded ships while being lower then Captain rank. William Bligh, for example, was a Lt. Cmdr while "captain" of the Bounty. He went on to "captain" the Falcon while a Commander. Lt. James Cook was given command of the Endeavor. His first campaign lasted 3 years. At Commander rank Cook was made "captain" of the Resolution.

As far as the ST universe, there have also been several Star Trek novels which had lower rank characters commanding vessels and eventually progressing up to the actual Captain rank and more advances ships as the novel series progressed. It's not as uncommon as you seem to want to make it.
