Is there an option I havent discovered that would allow you to always see your teammates targets?
I mean besides when you target a teammate.... like having their target always listed next to their portrait/ health bars on your screen.
Also I seem to be somewhat confused on the assist target option.... when its active it doesnt seem like I always wind up firing on my teammates target, and to top it off I always wind up healing other players when im trying to heal myself and end up dying as a result.
Id appreciate some insight into these things if someone can help me out.

I normally turn off the "assist" option. It would be nice if there were a way to always show your team-mates' targets, but I'm pretty sure there isn't.

I have had this problem also.
F2 through F5 will target your team mates on the team from top to bottom of the team list on the UI (F1 will target yourself). So can before healing, buffing or assisting hit one of those keys to select a team mate or yourself and you can hold it down while clicking a power to ensure that team mates won't get deselected some how.
This doesn't work with key binds though.
And I have found Assist to be more trouble than it is worth sometimes. The poster above has given good advice by saying it should be turned off.

One of the options is to highlight enemies life bar when they are a target of your target (I.E a team mate) and another option is "recently damaged" I believe...
Obviously that isn't perfect as any target that has been damaged will show, not just the CURRENT target. And with the first one, it requires you select your team mate first.
What I would usually do is target whoever I am choosing to follow and then select their target.
Also, you can bind a command to message your team to target a specific person. You SHOULD be calling targets rather than waiting to see who people are shooting at, it is far more efficient.
So in this case F5 is bound to target team mate 1 and then fire the listed tray powers, as well as switch to aux power setting, since most are aux dependant.
More often then not Im flying my escort so Im not looking to heal anyone.
I keep the health bars turned on all the time so I can see if an enemy is at the point where i can just pop in and finish them off.
It works out really well when I have a good perspective on the area where everyone is fighting but when youre in the middle of everything its not ideal.
If I target a teammate and hold down the F key then hit an attack will that attack be on their target every time?
I know its a crap shoot if I dont hold down the key.
