exactly where in options do you find the setting mentioned above for the 'health bar' tip?

ESC,Options, and then Display, maybe? In any case, you'll see a bunch of options about displaying your name, ally names, etc.

One of the lines is for the health bars, and one option in the pick list is 'Recently Damaged'.

I believe the title of the tab is "HUD".

thanks very much, my options screen was not full sized and i didn't realize there were more tabs, but i found them. looking forward to trying out these new tips.
