So if I get a "normal" tribble of any kind, I can breed him and hone him into whatever I need? Or is that a pipe dream?

A vanilla loot drop tribble, given the proper foods, can be used to eventually produce any tribble except the Rivera, Fluidic, Borg, or Photonic. See the tribble breeding FAQ sticky.

The basic tribbles (Stahl, Dotson, and Sparkes) are lootable. All others apart from the c-store tribbles have to be bred from these. There are a couple of really good breeding flowcharts stickied here
