# 1 Questions about the Skill Tree
11-21-2010, 05:42 PM
So I I am at level Lt Cmdr level six and I think I am being to get the hang of the Skill point tree, there is only a few things I would like some Clarification on. First off I am an escort captain just to give you an idea of what my skill tree look like. As an escort captain , Tactical version. Being tactical would I need to put any points in Starship Operations and Engineering?

Secondly. I just made my Science officer learn medical tricorder. I made her learn both 1 and 2 , do I need to skill up Medical Tricorder 1 or can I just skip Medical tricorder 1 and just go straight and skill up medical tricorder 2?

I have a ton more question but I don't want to make your eyes glaze over but for me that is the most pressing needs. Thank you for any assistance anyone can render me

There is some advantage in putting SP into those areas.

Your captian's skills boost the abilities of your bridge officers (Boffs) by a % amount, depending on how many skill points you put into it. Generally speaking, skills in the operations tree boost science officer abilities, and skills in the engineering tree boost engineering officer abilities. Tactical officer abilities are boosted by weapons and starship captaining skills.

Now, each boff ability generally has three captain skills that boost it - for example, Emergency Power to Shields I is boosted by Engineering Training, Shield Maintenance and Shield Efficiency. By putting skill points into all these, you can boost the ability's effect and reduce its cooldown time.

This is where planning can have some effect. If you know what abilities your boffs will have, you can plan to put SP into the relevent captain skills. You can also see what skills boost an ability by going into your captain's skill tree and using the drop down box in the top righthand corner to select an ability. The skills that boost it will then be highlighted.

Don't worry too much if you've put your points in the wrong place - at each rank promotion, you get a respec token which will allow you to redo your skillpoints.

I assume you're talking about your science bridge officer? Having both skills trained means that she can use them both in combat - so, instead of waiting for MT2 to cooldown before using it again, she can use MT1, meaning she can heal twice as often. That said, MT2 is more effective than MT1, so keep that in mind.

No problems. As I say, "The only stupid question is one you already know the answer to." So ask away. You'll find plenty of people here willing to help.

Well I am going to take you up on your offer, that Tactical Officer, does that mean ME or my bridge officer? also at LT Commander should I have stuff any skills into Engineering and Starship Operations did I mess up? i didn't know I get a skill respec token at ever rank up so I still have my old one, i refused to use it because i didn't quite understand what I had to do. if I get higher up will I get two token or would my first token be over ridden when I gain a new rank?

In that particular case, I was specifically referring to your bridge officers. I believe your own captain abilities (ie. Attack Pattern Alpha, Subnucionic Beam etc) are also affected, but I'm not entirely sure about that.

Considering that all fed ships have at least one sci and engineering officer slots, it is advantageous to have the SP there to boost their abilities. Especially since your engineering abilities tend to be your primary tanking abilities.

You get one new token per rank. So, you should have one now, and you'll get another when you rank up to Commander. Think of them as a currency - each respec cost one token (i.e. each click of the finish button), and if you run out of tokens, you can spend Merits to respec, or buy the equivalent of a respec token on the C-Store.
