I posted this idea in the Feedback and the Tribble Forums. The Seperation of Ground skills and Space Skills is very much needed. This could partly help out PvEers survive more in PvP since they wouldn't split off their points into Space and Ground.

Hopefully, they will do this is part of the Ground Revamp.

Only going to work if

1. Amount of pool points increased to allow to spec into clear roles in both space and ground without being half effective in each section.

example: space healer / ground fabrication specialist or tactical escort dps guy / firearms master

2. Free captain trait reassign + free skill respec

3. Increased captain trait options to allow to pick from 3 space skills only and 3 ground skills only, 6 total.

4. Re balance all the traits to make the crappy ones worthwhile and add more space traits

5. Racial bonus traits should be 2 assigned extras that can not be used by other races on top of your 6 traits that you get to pick for all races. And make alien only get to pick an 1 extra trait for sacrificing 2 assigned traits.
All races two assigned traits should be one ground and one space.

I'd be willing to go down with the ship if it meant that we could have separate point pools.

Certainly there would have to be some tweaking going on. I'm sure that Cryptic, when they were developing their skill system, made some sort of calculation as to what the XP cap should be. I'm sure it could be scaled back proportionally on both ends to effectively split ground and space.

This would be a good opportunity to expand the ground trees more and add some new stuff. I would like to see more abilities added in, personally. Maybe a series of "general" abilities that anyone can take in addition to what you get from kits?

One option is to have skill boxes relating to certain weapons. For example, you might have a Rifles tree that would grant new rifle specials and rifle-specific skills. Off the top of my head, it might be nice to have an ability at the maximum box of Sniper Rifle that gives a slightly longer ranged shot. The max box of Split Beams could cause it to hit 4 targets, not 3. Things of that nature.

The ground queues are so bad lately I'm willing to entertain almost any idea at this point. With the recent changes to captain space skills, a balanced build is getting near impossible for tacs and still not that great for sci/eng.

Just let us have dual specs. Charge us a small amount of merits to switch back and forth.

The traits idea is going to far, IMO.

Traits could also be put into the dual-spec thingy.

I don't expect this to happen with the ground combat revamp, though. But it is something that Cryptic should look into. The current solution isn't really satisfying and the topic has come up before (kinda like Fed Carriers, except that no one hates this idea ).

Traits would be nice. (I'm not sure how much they mean to a ground spec toon as I really don't do ground much)
As far as space skills... ya there is now way with all the ship points needed to be competitive in space that you have anything left over for ground. Why would I go do ground pvp when I KNOW my unspeced toon is going to get slaughtered. (my ground would improve if I did it enough but I would still be at a disadvantage) By splitting the points they need to LEAVE the space points alone and add a point pool for ground that would be fitting.

I would hate to see them change it so they are pulling points from the overall to give us ground points. Both sides would be annoyed as the heavy ground spec guys would likely loose... and the heavy space guys would loose as well.

This would have to be an ALL in or nothing fix. I couldn't just be a force people to spec ground change.

I like this idea, and agree with the people who don't want to split the current pool in half. Give us PLENTY for both if this happens!
