If you want to know how many hours you've played on a character you need to put /played into the chat window and it will tell you how much time you've spent on a character.

But if you're looking at the veteran reward counter, that doesn't require 24 hrs of actual gameplay to count a day. It simply counts days since you began playing Star Trek Online (Before release if you bought the lifetime or 12 month packages offered beforehand) + 30 days for each game key used.
