1) The NES at a friend's house and my first time playing a video game (I think in like 1989 or so). This is when my life was destroyed and I began my sad journey as a video game addict.
2) Nintendo 64. I didn't have internet access until High School. I didn't know it was coming. Then I saw a commercial. Then I dreamed about it. Mario 64 was one of the greatest gaming surprises and one of the best gaming experience being my first true 3d game.
3) Super Smash Bros. By this time I had internet access and a computer that wasn't from the 80s in my house. Still, though I'd heard of it I never bothered figuring out what it was. Then I saw another commercial, probably the best video game commercial ever, and suddenly my dream of having a Nintendo character fighting game was realized. I played Smash Bros and Melee for years at school, friend's houses and college. I'd play Brawl more but I guess everything has it's season and I'm finally sick of Smash Bros after like 10 years of playing it obsessively.
No offense to Playstation, my tons of PC games or STO. But nothing matches those. NOTHING!
My biggest surprise would probably have to be JFK Reloaded. Never heard of it? It was a very...interesting piece of programming that never got a US release, for obvious reasons. Less of a game, it was more an interactive reconstruction of the assassination of JFK. You took the part of Lee Harvey Oswald, and, based on the Warren Commission reports, the Zapruder film, eyewitness testimony, you had to kill JFK.
But wait! There's more to it than just making sport of one of the most memorable and tragic events in recent US history. You see, the first person to make the shot that was closest (or spot on) to the actual bullet that killed Kennedy won $100,000.
The surprise? That, although the 'game' was universally condemned, it was still released. People will try anything, these days.
My biggest experience? I would have to say City Of Heroes, which was my first MMO. I had received some pretty bad news the day before I bought it, and went out on December 23rd, fighting through the crowds of Christmas shoppers, to buy a game which would sap away my free time. The store manager of the shop I went into's a good friend of mine, and he suggested CoH.
Now, I'd played online games before. Yahoo Pool, Scrabble, and I was very fond of MUDs. However, my friend suggested that, instead of that World Of ******** game I'd heard so much about, I try this Superhero game instead. I installed it, loaded it up, and...here I am. If it wasn't for that game, I almost certainly wouldn't be playing this one, now. I also wouldn't be living in this house (very long and boring story). I made friends, laughed, gained some small modicum of fame, and I only put the game down because I had to.
One of the best moments of the sequel, IMO. Beautifully done.
Was also in the first, word for word. I hated leaving her. At least it gave birth to Raynor's Raiders. To think, it was only because Mengsk realized she was drawing in the Zerg from across the sector, he even used her to lure them to enemy systems along side the Psi-emitters. He had no idea she was the chosen one promised to the Zerg, the one destined to kill the Overmind and a woman now hell bent on killing him.
However, i hated how the second one ended. She should have never been rescued... I mean in the expansion in 99' they gave Raynor the most amazing speech in which he said, "I am going to be the man to kill you Dar'lin" and HE LET HER LIVE!
For now, yes. However, consider that we still have the Protoss and Zerg stories to come, each one with (presumably) that particular faction winning. Things don't look good for humanity, if the Zerg comes last.
