The news about the Borg add-on sets got me to thinking about one change I'd love to see added to STO.

Dedicated slots on ships for armor "consoles". It doesn't make sense to me that in order to put armor on the ship's hull, an engineering slot has to be used, simply because while a science ship, for example, may not be physically able to install as many EPS flow regulators as a bigger cruiser, or as many phaser relays as an escort, but every starship in the game has a hull.

So, I thought I'd list a few pros and cons, in my mind, at least..

Pros:
1. Would free up an engineering console slot for every ship that has armor equipped
2. All ships would be able to have armor. (I don't PvP enough to say how much it would add balance to PvP)
3. Heck, with the add-on bit tech, who says adding different armor to your ship might change it's appearance like the Borg set will?

Cons:
1. People who use more than one armor console would see a reduction in their protection, if they were limited to one armor console, obviously. Once again, I've no idea how many people use multiple armor consoles.
2. Might lengthen PvP overall, especially if fewer ships are susceptible to one-shot kills
3. Increased forum traffic related to the previous two points.

I can't be the only one who's thought about this.

No, you aren't the only one.

This and Warp Reactors are the two commonly asked "new" ship components.

Personally I could see a system like this:
Ships have different number of armor slots. Cruisers and Science Vessels are bigger, so armoring them up is very expensive (not just in terms of resources, but also in terms of extra mass added). Escorts are smaller and are primarly designed for combat purposes, so spending resources on heavier armor makes sense. Also, canonically, one of the "super"features of the Defiant was its ablative armor, a new thing for Federation ships at the time.
Heavy Armor (Escorts): 4 Armor consoles
Medium Armor (Cruisers): 3 Armor consoles
Light Armor (Science Vessel, Carriers) : 2 Armor consoles

Heavy, Medium and Light also have additional meaning against weapons, along the following lines:
Beams: More effective against lighter armors
Dual Beams: More effective against medium armor
Cannons and Turrets: More effective against light armor
Dual Cannons: More effective against medium armor
Heavy Dual Cannons: More effective against heavy armor
Torpedoes: More effetive against heavy and medium armor
Mines: More effective against medium and light armor.
(The difference in damages shouldn't be more then 25 % or so...)

I like the idea of armor/hull types. Maybe having Titanium as the base hull type, giving a +5% damage reduction. For the greedy types, a latinum hull would increase mission credit reward, or increased credits for item resale.

how pray tell does one make a hull out of liquid latinum, they press it in gold so they dont die from latinum poisening, its like mercury, but worse.

ps latinum is liquid at .1 degrees above absolute zero, so no, not even in the cold of space is it solid, and for some reason it has a high boiling point and never becomes gasious outside of stars.
