STFs are not difficult for a team composed of halfway decent players with a proper gameplan that is followed by the group. It's that simple.

The average PUG, however, simply does not qualify. If you are basing your judgement of STFs on PUG runs, you need to find yourself an active fleet. While you're at it, get yourself some decent gear; common Mk VIII shields and armor may "get your through" an STF, but it will only make your run seems all the more tedious. This is especially true if YOU are the sole medic in the group.

This is a multiplayer game. Expect to have to work in a team to achieve a goal.

Honestly, the problem isn't the PUG, but rather the lack of leadership in the PUG. Get one person willing to step up and take charge and most people will fall in line. Your typical PUG player isn't bad, just inexperienced and, well, not too analytical.

But people would rather muddle along than be the one to take charge. Same reason you can see 5 people all announcing in chat that they are looking for the same mission, over and over. They could form a full team. But that would mean one of them would have to be leader. And then if you only get 4 people, it is your job to go find that 5th. And maybe set the strategy in the mission....

This is also why you'll see things in PUGs like 2 or 3 people that die all the time to the trash, while the other 2 or 3 move as a group, do the fighting retreat thing, and wipe out the spawns (or get wiped out when too much stuff gets aggrod, but more slowly than others). There will have been no talk of strategy. They'll simply do what they do, identify the other players that know what they are doing, and begin to work with them. No talking about it. No attempt to improve the others. Because, again, that requires effort and assumes taking responsibility and people cannot be bothered with that.

That said, the STFs are a bit tedious. Note I'm not saying hard there, but tedious. The same thing over and over. Infected has too much area with dense trash. The Cure could do with one less shield. KA has 6 generators, well, if you can kill 4, you can kill 6, so is 6 really necessary?

Definitely have different experience in PuGs, most pugs i have had the misfortune of joining there are too many leaders, everyone knows what to do and everyone else is doing it wrong and all they do is whine and cry about the STFs being insanely hard while spamming autofire and throwing plasma grenades all over the instance.

That being said, our fleet helps people get thru this stuff and pug one of two often enough and it seems "individuals" joining a fleet for a run are more willing to pay attention and listen. And no, you don't need Vent, don't need TS3, GSC or skype.. you need common sense (a stopwatch helps for KA), something severely lacking in PUGS...

Indeed, you dont need voicechat and also no stopwatch for KA.
If you are a TAC or have a TAC in your team, it is easy to count when gates will be open again.
As soon as gates are open, start the Tactical Initiative.
The TI cooldown time is the same as gates

I had to join a fleet to finish The Cure but it shouldn't be so hard to where it is literally impossible for brand new players to come in and figure it out. What's the point of a game that people can't play and can't win? With the lack of stuff to do at the high end, Cryptic can't afford for its limited endgame content to be this inaccessible to average players. The Borg STFs are just badly designed. But Terradome is actually more enjoyable.

Hey, selective plasma nades in doorways can be a good tactical asset :p

If it´s fun to play STF´s ina elitist fleet is irrelevant.
The majority of peeps outside fleets want to have to do something at endgame and STF´s like they are now are a FAIL cause they **** off players big time. And that´s really not healthy for STO population. Now even more as peeps desperately try to get this borg set.

I'll just complain that the rest of the game is Far Too Easy and does nothing whatsoever to prepare "average" players for the Team challenge that the STF's represent.

I'd rather have Mandatory Death Penalties to finally be rid of players that only complain when the going gets tough, instead of actually learning to better use skills and be socially connected to the rest of the player base.

With the state STO is in, Cryptic needs to be FAR more concerned with player retention period and less concerned with our online social tendencies. Endgame content that people don't enjoy just doesn't make any sense.

EVE also attempts to force players into "corporations" through game mechanics and it's not going any better.
