# 1 Science Ship?
10-18-2011, 12:04 AM
So I've been doing some reading on the forums, and I want to try and clarify some stuff, and get a few direct answers to some questions.

I'm a sci captain about to get my first ship, and while I have a basic idea of what I want to do, I had a few basic questions that Ijust can't seem to get a clear answer on.

1) What sets sci ships apart from the other classes? (what are the real strengths)
2) Will I be PVP viable in a sci ship
3) Will I have a harder time questing as a sci ship captain?

Also, I have a tactical char I am working on as well, would it be viable to stick him in a science ship? Or would that just be a waste of my abilities?

Thanks!

1) What sets sci ships apart from the other classes? (what are the real strengths)
Science strength lies in the areas of crowd control and healing. While not as good healer as a Cruiser, a Science Vessel has the best heal over times.
It's crowd control abilities allow it to open up enemies for succesful attacks, and to hinder their efforts to fight back.

2) Will I be PVP viable in a sci ship
Science Vessels are arguably the most powerful ships in the PvP metagame. The crowd control abilities work superb against enemy players, as they disrupt with the ability to heal (Scramble Sensors, Photonic Shockwave) and ignore shield damage reduction (Tachyon Beam and Charged Particle Burst) and can generally control the enemy team's position (Tractor Beam, Tractor Beam Repulsors, Gravity Well). At the same time, you have access to good heals (Hazard Emitters, Transfer Shield Strength) and the counter to the worst debuffs (via Science Team).

If you add in a Science Captain, you have some of the best Captain abilities for PvP - Sensor Scan for damage output boost, Photonic Fleet for "spam" and extra DPS, Photonic Fleet for significant damage reduction to all team members, and, most importantly, Subnucleonic Beam, to take out all the buffs players like to use.

In way, the strength of Science is a result of the strength of Tactical and Engineering buffs. It can be very easy to kill a target that is not sufficiently buffed with powers like Emergency Power to Shields if you have significant (tactical) damage buffs and/or focus fire on your side. But a tthe same time, a properly buffed target that is supported by powers like Extend Shields, Engineering Team, Auxillary to Structural Integrity Field, Hazard Emitters and Transfer Shield Strength can be impossible to take down. Science abilities can either partially ignore this (shield drain powers ignore shield resisistance), hinder it (Scramble or Shockwave to make healing dificult or temporarily suppress them) or take them away outright (subnuclonic beam).

In a way, Science is the breaker of the Damage vs Healing + Resistance stalemate.

3) Will I have a harder time questing as a sci ship captain?
If you stack up on the right healing and resistance powers, questing will not be difficult and you will have no trouble surviving. But generally, most of science offensive abilities are best used against player ships, and are not as effective against NPCs due to the way NPCs use powers (mostly less then players) vs how players use them (a lot of a PC's survivability and damage comes from its powers).
In an Escort or Cruiser, you would probably be able to manage a better damage output and can take down enemies faster than with a Science Vessel. (I generally consider for levelling any new characters now to pick Escort or BoPs as my choice, but it might be better, if you play your first science char, to stay on science vessels to get a feel for them. Even though ultimately, if you intend to PvP, PvE doesn't really prepare you...)

1) Science Vessels can utterly shut down their foes. They use powerful E-War that can completely disable a single ship and turn crowds of enemies against each other. They have powerful healing abilities and come with Subsytem Targeting abilities as well as Sensor Analysis which lowers the enemy resistances and makes their Sybsystem Targeting more powerful. In short: They are utter beasts in PvP and in a Duel they are unbeatable.

2) LOL... The only way I could say no is if you scare away everyone who would want to PvP against you with how wicked you are. It may not deal damage as fast as an Escort but if it survives an Alpha Strike then it will rule its competition.

3) Slightly. It is not as quick at dusting missions as an Escort but with a little extra time invested in each mission you will do just fine.

My first Captain was a science officer, and I had a great time with her. Enjoy
