# 22 Install Problem
01-09-2011, 05:57 AM
Hmmm... well, the teaser and screenshots look great, but can't get it to install locally. I'm not a noob so this is not a PEBCAK issue.. and this is not a rights issue either as I am currently a local admin and have also attempted elevated privileges to install. No I do not ever have problems with installation of other programs using MSI or cabinet installation methods. I am curious as to what the installer settings are.

Not only can I not install this program on my local machine now, I will not given the flags it is throwing. I was really wanting to give this program a try too. Might I suggest making a webified version instead as this would be the most convenient for everyone. Also this will allow everyone to instantly take advantage of any updates that might come along.

Zone Alarm Extreme Security Suite is flagging this as a malicious program...

"Setup.exe is a malicious program and was prevented from running on your computer"

The following additional info is provided:
=================================

setup.exe has been blocked from creating a new process.

The current security setting for setup.exe does not permit this action. Your computer is safe.

What should I do?

ZoneAlarm Extreme Security has blocked setup.exe from creating a new process. If you trust setup.exe and believe it requires a process to be created, then you may want to change the Trust Level of this program. It is also possible that the attempt to create a process was malicious in nature. In that case, you should not change the Trust Level so that your system will continue to be protected.

Why?

setup.exe is potentially malicious. This is particularly true if the new process will load malicious programs or utilize an excessive amount of CPU time, memory, and other resources.

was going to report for sticky, but it seems that function is only for problem posts....so

this needs a sticky

edit:
If I may suggest; the color coding when comparing DPS of two builds is a nice way to see at a glance which is higher, but I still found myself doing the math to get exact numbers (I'm a nerd like that). Suppose this program could be given a field just below the DPS numbers to report the difference? Example

You should uninstall ZoneAlarm and throw it out the window. Too many false positives.

I'll try your program tonight, but it looks promising.

I'm unsure why you'd want this? Aren't their weapon slots exactly the same as the T5 ships? Nothing else the refits get is factored into the current DPS calculations as far as I can see, so you can easily do comparisons for the Defiant Refit just by using the templates for Advanced/Fleet Escort.

ON a minor sidenote, I'm amazed no-ones asked for the Klink version yet

Oh, thought it had more.

How about adding Beam Array: Overload 1-3 to the skills then?

Torpedo and mine launchers are just a filler. It's to make it so the user can account for all their slots, instead of having to remember to leave some empty for the launchers. I am considering adding a "Burst DPS" category that would list the damage from Beam Overload, Mines and Torpedoes.

I figured the Rar format was pretty widespread at this point, but I'll change it to a zip file in the next version. Maybe I can also make it a self extracting exe which will automatically run the installer.

Setup.exe is just the standard install that is made by the Visual Studio 6 deployment wizard (not really the greatest, but it more or less seems to work). I have no idea why Zone Alarm is flagging it, but I didn't actually create that program at all (blame Microsoft). Maybe it's because Visual Studio 6 is pretty long in the tooth at this point, so the install program is probably outdated.

My program doesn't really need to be installed at all, except to include the Visual Basic run time files (which are probably included with newer Windows versions anyway). It doesn't actually have any system registry entries or access anything on the drive. I'll see about releasing a version that is just a zip file so people don't have to install it.

As far as a web version, that's probably a good idea, but I'd pretty much have to reprogram the entire thing from scratch. I agree that web programs are ideal, but I knew how to program VB6 and hadn't really learned any other programming languages. So it was a choice between just going with what I knew and getting it done, or taking the time to learn something new first. In the future I can consider converting it to a different format, but for the time being I'm afraid it will have to remain in its current incarnation.

As was already mentioned, there is no difference in weapon load out between any of the T5 vessels. The only difference between the two T5s for each class right now is the picture.

I have mixed feelings about adding the refits. It actually wouldn't be hard, as I can use the same images as for Tier 4, but I don't know whether cluttering the ship tier drop down list with more ships is a good idea. This is the same reason that I didn't add the Excelsior/Nebula for Tier 3.

From a simplicity standpoint I probably should have only put a single one of the Tier 5 ships in, as it is. That said, I'll look into it and see if I can come up with something to provide for selecting your specific ship image, without making the program too complex to use.

Well, this is the Starfleet Academy forum. Probably no Klinks even come in here.

The problem with the Klingon ships is that I don't have a high enough Klingon to access all of them. With the Federation ships I just copied a character to Tribble and then purchased all of them, set them to the most canon class and took a screen shot of the ship information window.

I sent a message to SpiderMitch who made the Graphical Ship Chart, asking whether I could use his top down images (which I can just copy out from his Klingon Chart), but he has not responded yet.

If a Klingon General wants to help out by taking screen shots of each of the top down views from the ship information (preferably on Tribble where you don't have to waste real energy credits getting the ships), then I would be happy to add them.

For the time being I can at least substitute in a T1 Bird of Prey for the Klingon vessels, which is better than the generic cruiser.

The problem with Beam Overload is that it has an inconsistent effect on DPS output. That's because it provides a burst of damage, but then your power drops by 50. How much your DPS output is lowered due to the power drain depends on whether or not you have an EPS flow regulator equipped, and what version you have equipped, as well as what your weapon power level is.

If I add Beam Overload it will probably only be to display the potential burst damage. It would be very difficult and time consuming to figure out the impact of Beam Overload on overall DPS.

ZA is fine, 3 alerts of this type in 2 years... mainly to do with installer configuration/options or hostile program trying to hook into the system in ways it shouldn't. I suspect the OP is correct about this being flagged because of the age of VB6 install builder. Perhaps all that is needed is an update to his version of VS to support later MS OS's. If Nagorak is able to provide a version that doesn't require local install (as most of us already will have the runtimes) then I'll wait for that version. I'll even volunteer to compile the source under a later version if that would be helpful.

Thanks for giving the community what looks like a useful tool Nagorak.

I am an Engineer.

I rarely if ever notice a power loss due to Beam Overload.

I have the Red Matter Capacitor and there's a weapons specific power boost as well from the Engineer career.

It would be nice to have my Refit Defiant pic on there.
