So, having read and contributed to the latest threads about STFs being too hard which appear to have popped up again because people want the borg set (which isn't all that great anyway) but cannot complete the STFs (and are either unwilling or unable to run them with one of the hundreds of fleets that do them daily), I have an idea for a compromise.

It is difficult (if you want to be specced as well as you possibly can) to spec for PVP and PVE. How about introducing a set like the borg set (but obviously a little different) which can be achieved competing in PVP? This should be time consuming and challenging to obtain and should be unique (not simply the borg set which would make no sense at all).

This way there would be three ways to earn a unique set in STO, one for each branch of the 'family'; Crafters, PVEers and PVPers. Smiles, happiness and joy would abound (for at least five minutes until people find something else to moan about). With this option, If people cannot obtain one of the three sets available then they are just not playing STO in any real sense anyway and I would have no sympathy for them what so ever.

Just let us buy the set items with marks of excellence or whatever those otherwise useless endgame pvp marks are called.
Say 500 or even 1000 each.

So, you want to have the same borg gear I ran through an STF to get? But yet, you don't want to go through the same means to get it? I also would assume you want the Aegis set to, since crafting isn't your style either?

I'm not targeting any person individually. Just the many people not willing to partake in a section of the game they feel is to hard when numerous others have these items and on a daily basis beat these same missions. Plenty of threads have been started about STF's being to hard and many of us have offered helped to those who need it. PM StrykerV in game if you need help on any of them. If we are on the same time and time permits me, I'll try and get you through it.

Not against the idea at all since I've seen this in other MMOs.

Something to consider... this will impact PvP matches. Some will be overrun by door sitters who are just there to collect the marks and not really interested in participating at all. Reason I mention is that you saw this behaviour quite a bit in WoW when they introduced the PvP armor sets there... much to the annoyance of the PvP community.

Some people are just into PvP and would rather focus their playtime there.

I'd love a 3rd set of components that can be earned through PvP!

I really like the idea of being able to buy it with the current PvP marks! (As some of my PvP toons have been PvPing forever and have tons of these marks )

for gfx work, just make a big red button on the side of the ship, with the letters IWIN under it!

No, he wants another, 3rd set, that you can get by participating in PvP. Makes sense to me.
Probably with a requirement like "Win 4 Arenas and 4 Capture & Holds" and every time you do, you can select one item.

What kind of PvP gear might fit? What kind of Set might we come up with?

Ares/Kahless Resilient Shield Array
6.100 Shield Capacity, 201 Shield Regeneration every 6 seconds
5 % Absorption, 5 % Bleedthrough
+10 Shield Efficiency

Ares/Kahless Deflector Array
+35 Sensors
+25 Deflectors
+25 Emitters
+10 Auxillary Efficiency
+10 Starship Projectile Training
+10 Starship Energy Weapon Training

Ares/Kahless Impulse Engine
+12 Flight Speed
+8 Turn Rate
+105 Full Impulse Speed
+10 Engine Efficiency
+10 Auxillary Performance

Set Bonuses
2 Set Items: Adaptive Shield Modulation
When hit by all damage, 2.5 % chance to negate all active stuns and holds, and provide immunity to stuns, holds and mobility-affecting effects for 15 seconds. Goes to 60 second cooldown after proc.

3 Set Items: Temporary Phase Cloak
Turns the ship invulnerable and cloaked for up to 30 seconds. Ship cannot use weapons or powers on anyone else but itself, and it cannot be affected by weapons or powers. 6 Minute Cooldown.

Notes:
Not sure I like the 3 Set Items powers.
The 2 Set items power would certainly be liked by many players due to the threat stuns and holds can pose, adressing a certain hole in our current defensive options regarding stuns. (There is only one power to avoid a stun, and you must use it preventively.)

Visual Appearance:
The Deflector might add some kind of extra-dish (maybe armored looking) to the deflector dish, something representing an improved targeting capability and just some general toughness.

The Shield Array might add additional small "buckles" representing additional shield generators that provide the added resilience. When hit, these "buckles" might show an additional shield bubble. Overall, the ship might appear a little darker and more constrastful.

The Impulse Engines might cover the engine with some additional platings and turn the colors of the engine trails darker, representing a better stealth. (the auxillary bonuses also indirectly improve stealth rating.)

The name might differ between Klingons and Federation. Ares, the God of War would fit a PvP item on the Federation side, but the name would be meaningless to Klingons (but then, so would be Aegis, I suppose). Picking "Kahless" as a name feels simple, but then it might work anyway. Alternatives could be Kor, Kang, Koloth and Chang.

While I'm note sure about what the equipment should be I like the idea of brainstorming some set bonuses......... Like MustrumRidcully, I have thought of bonuses which would be particularly helpful in PVP, although I am a little escourt biased hence the engine bonus for hit and run puroposes but would also help everyone get back into the fight more quickly?

Set (2 items): Autonomous Shield Modulation - has 25% chance to resist 1 tractor beam. 90 second cooldown after proc. Would also be a nice counter to those pvping with the borg set!

Set (3 items): Variable flow impulse manifolds - Active power - boosts engine power by 20 for 10 seconds. 120 second cooldown.

I like the aesthetics to be quite bulky, heavy engineering, steam-punk types - perhaps based on scavenged parts theme (from all the arenas/battlegrounds and assualt maps the pvper fights in).

P.S MustrumRidcully, I think Stryker was talking to Idali (the post immediately above his At least I hope so! If he was I agree, as I do not want to see any of these sets available in the cursed C-Store or available for purchase with Marks, Emblams, Bananas or Salt. They should all be earned by following their respective content and no other way I reckon.

Suggestion set bonus:

2pc: Emergency Command Hologram. When held/stunned after 3 seconds, 10% chance of a 5 second break all holds/stuns. 2 minute CD

(this will have a chance of saving your bacon 1 out of 10 times you're held. not too game altering)

3pc: Micro Warp. When hull hits 25%, 25% chance of an instant 5km jump in random direction.

(this may save you, but it's a double edged sword... you may well jump out of healing range... or if you're an escort on the tail of a cruiser, you can suddenly find the roles reversed Should make for interresting gameplay.)

I think hold breaking procs will be appropriate for PvP sets, as 9 out of 10 PvP fatalaties are caused by too low speed.

I like the name definitely more then mine, in the end the specific mechanics is probably something best left to the Devs and then the player complaints, as long as the intent is clear - a counterpower to stuns and similar effects.

I don't think this will work as a randomly activated ability, for the pure loss of control that you mention.
But as an activatable ability it should work fine.
