# 1 Space mouse control fatigue
01-15-2011, 02:20 AM
Hi all,

I started playing when the game was first released, but had to move and got sidetracked with other games (big year in PC gaming). Anyway, I kept paying my monthly fee, and now I'm trying to get back into STO (I'm embarrassed at how low level I am).

One of the issues with the controls really bothers me, and I'm wondering if there's some way to fix it. When controlling the ship in space, I almost always like to take direct control of the ship's steering by holding down both the left and right mouse buttons (especially during combat).

It's fine at first but after a while, I find it extremely fatiguing and my hand starts to cramp. I know that I could use the keyboard controls, but I already have enough to do with the keyboard to fire weapons, select abilities or items, etc. Plus using the mouse just feels more natural.

Is there some way I can simply turn on the direct steering so that I don't have to constantly hold down both mouse buttons? Maybe a toggle of some sort? This would be great in ground combat as well, since holding down the right button is also fatiguing (just not as much).

Any help on this would be MOST APPRECIATED! Thanks.

Try the A and D letters for left right, W S for down and up. Does anyone out there even use the mouse to fly? Plus you still have to take your hand off your mouse to collect craft materials to bang on your arrow keys during the collection minigame. If you need more info about manual keybinds check out http://forums.startrekonline.com/sho...d.php?t=192243

Actually as stated I'm aware of those control options and have rejected them. For me I use my left hand for combat keys (SPACE, 1-0 keys, f for action, q and e for speeding up and down, etc). I use my right hand on the mouse to steer the ship. The collection minigame can be controlled using the mouse which is how I do it.

Maybe I am alone in this. Probably comes from all the strategy, and RPG play. Nonetheless, this is how it feels right for me. Any other suggestions besides the keyboard? All I really want is to be able to use a key on the keyboard to toggle the mouse from it's normal operation to steering the ship, so I don't have to hold down the left and right mouse buttons at the same time for prolonged periods. Cryptic! You listening out there? This can't be very difficult to add. Please??

You could try getting a joystick? STO does have joystick support.

As to some sort of "lock" on the mouse controls...I thought there was, but I'm not sure. There might be some way to emulate the mouse movement as wasd keystrokes, but I don't know if that's even "legal"

I use the mouse also.

I've been looking into a better way to use mouse control also. The joystick option is only a partial solution, because lack and other effective way of looking/panning around the vessel using the additional buttons/"Hat" switches on the joystick...poor development by Cryptic.

I'm going to start a seperate post on it, but the joystick is best utilize with the abilty to assign Hat switches for view control, or even better, also include support for Track IR. Has its been said, our fingers are alread pre-occupied with all the other button mashing required in game.

The simple point of the matter is this...we need more and better fleshed out control options, regrdless of if they are typical or atypical control methods on MMORPGs...this wasnt your typical MMORPG the minute the decided to add flying vessels and pseudo 3D planes of motion...so why wouldnt it be obvious that thier deviation away from basic MMORPG gameplay, wouldnt also require a deviation from the typical means/hardware for controlling our characters?

the G13 is a great product. I used to use the mouse, too. On escorts thou, its easier to use a g13 or a joystick and put the camera in chase mode.

I already have a mouse and keyboard that I'm very happy with and don't have any intentions of changing. I'm using the Razer Imperator for my mouse and the Apple full size aluminum "chicklet" keyboard. Other than the funky function keys it's a great keyboard for typing (my speed went up) and for gaming. The razor mouse is the most comfortable I've ever used and includes advanced features for gaming like adjustable dpi and macro support. Unfortunately I can't see a way to use the macro function to simulate "keep the left and right mouse buttons down".
