# 1 Brand New TO STO
01-16-2011, 12:52 PM
Hello all,

I got here via Champions online site as I was looking for somethign different to play from WOW. Never knew this game was out there.

So I downloaded the demo and preparing to play it.

Should I just play what I feel like playing, can i really screw myself up from making stupid decisons cause i haven't thought about my choices?

How does this game play compared to WoW, have i a lot to figure out?

Cheers in advance

Play whatever you feel like playing. You get a free skill respec every time you go up a main rank (like lieutenant to lieutenant commander, not lieutenant 1 to lieutenant 2), so if you like the game and stick with the character, you'll be able to change the skills you picked around very easily.

I can't say anything agout how it compares to WOW, never played it.

Welcome to the game.

Dont worry about screwing up , you cant really. Lets just say that you actually did , then its no harm to start a new character , leveling in STO is crzily stupidly FAST and EASY and you can level again if you wanted too.

For PVE dont worry at all , ive flown ships im not specced at , used trashy whites and no thought at all into the build and items and still its easy and quick.

PvP is a little differant but youll come to that later if you want too although its not the best place for pvp.

This is the first MMO ive go tmore than one end game character , and here i got 5 LOL

Enjoy

i think STO is a little more involved than WoW but still not a difficult game. Pick what career sounds good to you Tactical, Science, or Engineer and have fun with it. PVE wise any career can go into any class of ship without making it hard to level, PVP is an entirely different animal I still havent figured out lol. My favorite so far is a Tactical in a cruiser (Excelsior retrofit to be exact) but i play around with escorts and sci ships just to have fun and figure out if there is a better setup

its pretty hard to really screw yourself up.

you get respecs at every major rank up (ie commander, captain etc) and its quite casual so you'll be fine.

and yeah play what ever takes your fancy. its a pretty different experience from wow in the way its set up. personally i dont really like wow and i think this is miles better, just not as much to do yet.

The game does have a bit of a learning curve, as you have space combat and ground combat aspect of the game. But The game is very forgiving for the beginning player. Almost all choices you make can be undone or changed later on. Each promotion (eaching a level ending in 1) gives you a respec token which allows a total repicking of your skill point choice. And you can get a new respec token with in game currency or via real money if you so desire. Equipment is an important part of the game but aren't any more important then your skills. Better gear will give your more protection or more DPS. The the different between the high-end gear and the more easly obtainable gear won't hamper you when doing the STFs. (High end, end-game raid missions which require 5 players to complete).

The game is geared more towards a casual stype of play.Don't go burning through the PvE game because you will be at the level cap before you know it. But you can go entirely PvP for you leveling progress if you wish. You don't have to set foot in any PvE content if you don't want to (beyond the tutorial).

Any comibination of Captain and (what you won't experience until the full game) and ship are all viable. Each combination players differently, and they all have her own strengths and weaknesses. You'll see aspects in Tank, Buff/Debuff and DPS in the captain careers and ship types. But you don't have to stay in those traditional roles. An Enginer Captain (Tanking) can pilot a more fragile Escort (DPS) ship, It won't have the highest DPS in space, but it will be a lot harder to kill then he typical Tactical Captain/Escort.

A warm welcome

You also have to decide which [i]race[/I to be, be it Klingon or Federation !

Most players start as the Federation (more PvE content), and part of the fun is exploring which playstyle suits you best (Tactical? Science? Engineering? Cruiser? Escort? etc.)...

Don't forget to have FUN !

Like the others said you can't really screw up. You can respec if you do. You can also change your ship anytime as well. There are only 3 classes and leveling is fast so it's not hard to find the one you like the best.

This game is more casual than WoW. You won't spend 10 hours a day in raids here. There are challenging endgame like raids (STFs) but once you have them down they take 1-3 hours tops. PvP is PvP, fight other players, not much to that in any game IMO. There are really good PvP teams out there so it can be fun and challenging as well.

As always check the forums for guides on gameplay, lots of good info around here. Good luck!
