We are still allowed to express our concerns, while you are allowed to always smile and say yes and amen to everything.

I just started like three days ago, and coming from 8 years buried in FinalFantasy XI Online, believe me when I say weekly maintenance is infinitely better than what little maintenance most other games undergo.

That aside however, I was completely unaware of today's downtime. I wish the link on the top of the main page would direct you to useful information, not just to Atari's STO support site.. That's just stupid, their information is always weeks behind "the now."

Maybe the decision to delay was strategic and/or part of the wider project and its critical path.

The new release date for the Delta Flyer could coincide with other updates or bug fixes. It's not uncommon for an organisation to maximise its marketing/sales potential. I'd also like to see them get it right first time, so I'm not upset by the delay.

That said, delays announced on the day just doesn't give the paying customer enough notice. There are some of us who take days off (sad as that seems to some I just don't care) to be there for the release as it happens. An act of dedication to the excitement, which isn't uncommon in the gamming community. There are some of us who will be there for the 12midnight launch of Halo (example), imagine if that was suddenly delayed and they announced it on the day of release. You could run losing an element of commitment from the fans.

Still, this time Cryptic did countdown the sever downtime in game, with 10min updates (30mins, 20mins 10mins and 1 min before downtime messages), which were appreciated and shows their customer relationship management is getting better.

However, with this delay it looks like Cryptic lost out on making quite a bit of money today.

I might have even gone for a lifetime subscription as an impulse buy whole lost in the delirium of flying my Delta Flyer.

At the first post:
Quote:
UPDATE: The maintenance is taken longer than expected, ETA has been extended to 7:00 AM PST (3:00 PM UTC). We will update if there are any changes to this ETA.
The launcher Message says:

Aw fiddlesticks. I'd have gone to work but no deployment for me for a month or so yet.

01-27-2011, 06:51 AM
i think it might be a bit informative to a lot of folks if cryptic where to explain if the delay in the maintenance window is caused by a hardware or a software problem instead of the standard srry we are bugging the game message
