The reasons for the extemded downtime are most likely,
adjustments of the databeses to make sure everything can handle the new stuff, theres a lot of changes in the space powers for example.
Extensive after patch testing to make sure they don't have to take the game down again in 12 hours.

Guys, do you think one of the reasons for the delay could possibly be because some of the Devs are ALSO stuck home because of the snow you guys are having? And they are unable to come into work to help out so their staff is severely reduced.
