Hell Yeah. When we actually get the other quadrants and possibly Level Cap raised.

Starfleet honors tradition, specifically navies of Earth's past. While the principles of military discipline are practiced by Starfleet, it is not a military organization. It's primary function is exploration that advances human knowledge of the galaxy.

I have and continue to admonish Cryptic for putting the chivalric salute that is no where to be seen used by Starfleet personal in any of the TV shows or movies that I am aware of.

alright what about section 31? a secret organization (akin to NSA or CIA or KGB) within starfleet... all such military organizations have inteligence gathering and covert operations with the purpose of trying to get an edge over the enemy. obsidian order. tal shiar. you name it.

besides, are we a generation that would prefer to romanticize something and call it something other than it is to make it politically correct and make it more palatable to the public? "a peace keeping humanitarian armada"... just like "U.N. Peace Keepers" and the men in black pin stripe suits... as long as you pay the protection money, they make sure your store never gets fire bombed. don't get so gushy over it people. just call it for what it is. Star Fleet is the UFP's Navy. they have GUNS... and SHIPS... and if you attack us they will BURN YOU UP... that's the job of the military. and they don't simply EXPLORE... they are conquistadors with the mission of spreading and proliferating the strength and influence of the UFP. to bring in as many members as allies as possible. you can't change a leopard's spots by calling it a tiger. Star Fleet is a MILITARY organization who's emphasis is on exploration, science, cultural relations, and diplomatic solutions in times of peace. but its first duty is that of defending the empi--- i mean ... err.. federation ... hehe. i will admit that the idea is somewhat unique in that almost all military units in time of peace focus on being prepared for war, and star fleet has other goals and ambitions. but that doesn't change the number 1 facet of the organization that makes it a military unit. the chain of command. you tell your boss to go fly a kite when he orders you to clean the urinals, and you get fired. tell captain picard to go fly a kite when he orders you to clean the phase inducers and you'll be standing tall before the man. although being an officer seems voluntary at times in that through the series a number of them resigned commission at-will... this is not so. in a military unit if you are given an order you can not resign your commission in order to get out of it. after you have completed your orders you may resign, but you must adhere to military dicipline while you wear the uniform.

Starfleet is primarily the exploration wing of the Federation. The reason they are heavily armed is because wandering off into the unknown completely defenceless would be a really bad idea.

Besides, even if you want to call it a military, it's 2409. The military living conditions of the 25th century would be substantially different to those of today.

No one travels interplanetary just to dance, and like others have said , all military (western style) bases have clubs. Most dont have dance clubs but thats more due to cost than choice.Im sure most American service people would love a good country western bar or New York style dance club.

First of all, you need to use paragraphs.

Now lets take a closer look at that number one facet that makes Starfleet a Military organization; Chain of Command. By your definition, policemen are military personal. They have a rank structure and are under an oath of duty. They cannot strike or refuse reasonable orders. So why are they not military? Because police are charged with serving and protecting the public, it's their primary function.

Lets look at something else, airline pilots. They have rank and chain of command. They have a sworn duty and cannot quit their job while in flight. Everything about them screams military, yet they are not. Their primary mission is providing a safe means of air travel.

The only difference between the two professions I have listed and your argument is armament. Starships are armed to the teeth with the biggest and best weapons technology allows. But the problem you have understanding is why, why are they armed. A Battleship or an Aircraft Carrier is built for the purpose of defending national sovereignty, while a Starship is armed to protect itself while operating autonomously in deep space.

You can complain about a Bar beeing on ESD all you want, the simple fact is that this is an MMO and MMO's have a demand for Social Zones... it's just part of the package.
For every guy that says Starfleet is a military there is another guy who want to Roleplay a Bartender in Quarks or something. and 10 more that want a room to dance-emote in...

Lets wait a week or two and see if there will still be Tribbles flying all arround ESD and Quono's then.

And don't you dare hate on the original Spacedock!
That ugly bunch of Polygons we had for the first year was an eyesore, this one is EPIC and just as important it is CANON.

Enough with the random made up BS, i pay for TREK... not for Star Wolves 3 :p

Wasn't there a scene in STIII where McCoy visits a bar and there's lots of aliens and music and starfleet officers enjoying themselves? It may or may not have been ESD, but it wasn't that far from what we've got in the new ESD.
