This post is in no way an attempt to degrade or insult players of either faction. This post is the result of encounters on my tier 2 Klingon and some chatter from Organized PvP rattling around in my head in the shower this morning while I tried to think about anything other than the fact that I had to go to work. I am seeing frustration from veteran Klingon players because they perceive new Klingon players as inferior and frustration from new Klingon players about how they are being expected to play.

If you are new to the Klingon side please consider some points about the Bird of Prey, why you are flying it, and how you are flying it.

The BoP loses an ensign slot. At the cap, this is the difference between 12 and 11 abilities, and the lost ensign ability is felt less in the presence of higher tiers. When you actually have Com. and Lt. Com slots to start playing around with combinations of bridge officers you can get the real benefit from the universal slots; at lower tiers the uni slots don't actually pay for the loss of the ensign. Choosing the BoP at Lt.Com means a 20% reduction in bridge officer abilities, assuming we’re not weighting the Lt. ability to be worth more. You are going to run out of abilities sooner in a BoP.

When you go on cooldown it is time or almost time to Bug Out. If you want to call it running away, fine. Bugging involves some very specific things. One, let your team know you are going to bug. Two, bug before you are screwed. Go at 20% shields, not 20% hull. Three, get to know your inertia (it’s your friend), the difference between evasive then engine battery v. engine battery then evasive, and your battlecloak.

Now comes the part some people do not like, and the heart of this post. If you are in a BoP heavy team and somebody blows up leaving you outnumbered, it is time for a Team Bug. If you have 5 BoPs and you lose one, Team Bug no question. You have thinner shields and hull and fewer ability options than every Fed ship, you are not built for slugging it out. BoPs can be very effective cross healers and can keep a team member up with heals, to a point, but you are not going to out heal a team of cruisers, and you are denying yourself the cloak attack bonus. The battlecloak is part of your offense. Understand this. Just because you CAN stay in until your CRF/BO/ HY come off cooldown doesn’t mean you should. Staying in denies you the damage bonus from the cloak. This is why you should cloak when you are coming off of cooldown, not just when you are damaged.

At T2 the Raptor has a little more hull than a fed escort and the K’Tanco turns a little better than the Fed cruiser, both can have the initial de-cloak bonus and then fight like a Fed ship. At T3 the K’Tinga is a monster with 4 front weapons which can be DHCs, stand and deliver if that's your thing.

I have been called a coward because I called for a Team Bug in chat on an all BoP team that was outnumbered. Please take this next statement at face value, it is not meant to be elitist. If you don’t want to “run away,” you should question whether the BoP is for you. Universal slots are not worth it in the early tiers, so what you are really saying by choosing the BoP is that you want a battle cloak. Are you willing to use it?

What's your point?

I mean, you start out saying don't get offended (in a more demeaning way, of course). Then you explain a bunch of stuff we already know, use a term that not everyone knows and basically say that anyone who stands their ground instead of tucking tail is stupid. What's not to get offended about?

Is there a suggestion or advice implied here that I missed? Are you saying no one should be playing BoPs except those who have no qualms with running away and hiding?

Really, what is your point?

You're right about being demeaning, edited, thanks.

It's not stuff everyone knows, at least not T2 and T3 BoP pilots playing from 10pm-2am EST.

I thought my point was clear, if you want to play a stand and deliver style in the early tiers, you should think about something other than a BoP. Guess I got long-winded since this was a good distraction from work.

Also, love the FireFox skins, I was like "Why is Blackavaar so familiar?" Then I looked at the border of my browser.
