Im pretty new to the game, tho I was in beta. I have been doing some SB 24 farming, and it seems that the ranking system for rewards is solely based off of damage done. The problem with this is, it makes it near impossible to be 1st when fellow Escorts are running around.
Imo i think it should be changed. Its quite easy to get npc ships to focus on you. But when u are focus fired, an Escort can easily just fly in and kill anything it wants while all ur energy is going into ur shields and staying alive. Which makes it hard to do any real dps. I think the point system should be tweaked to add points to those who manage to hold agro for people and stay alive. Say for instance, an escort flying into a group to kill something. He would die pretty fast therefore not really getting any points for either dps'ing or taking dmg, but if a Cruiser comes in and has 7 things hit him for 40 min while everyone kills his stuff. Should get some kind of points. Because right now, having 8 things attack me, and an escort flys in and takes everything out 1 by 1, makes them get the points and we are left with nothing.
Now the Flaw in this, is you could easily go into SB 24 and tank something for say, 10 min without killing anything just to rack up points. But if you put a limit to how many points one can receive after a period of time, or all together, it could fix the farming.
Being that i dont know how many points u get for doing w/e, but if i did, i would throw some math down for everyone instead of just making a suggestion. But right now its pretty lame just bein in the area, staying alive from a huge wave, and getting nothing.
I think you can also beat the damage numbers with a Cruiser - provided you know how to keep yourself alive. You said you are new to the game, and currently survivability is primarily granted by the powers you have - if you want to keep your Cruiser alive under focus fire, you need to run Emergency Power to Shields (primarily for the resistance bonus). 2 Copies are required to have it up permanently. At earlier levels, this isn't easy, of course, but you should be able to last longer than en Escort. And even in a Cruiser, you can run occassionaly. Evasive Maneuvers is one of the first powers you get in space! Use it.
If you play a Science Vessel, then you're really hosed. And even if healing would be counted, the cruiser can still easily beat that. There is no good way to measure a Science Vessels contribution to combat, unfortunately.
i do it with fleetmates or friends as a team. so the one of us gets first place, share the reward with the team.
so its fair for all of the team, because we did it as a team.
- Escort for dmg
- Cruisers for Heal & Dmg-Support
- Sci-ships for Heal&CC
So, there is a nice cannon-drop for the first? all escorts in team make a roll, the guy with highest number gets it. Same for other stuff.
But, if Healing counts the same way like dmg do for fleetbattles, then it is fair for all.
I must admit I do sometimes get a little annoyed when I hold aggro in my AC and really knuckle down to taking down multiple targets when a Escort comes in and blows every thing to bits that took me a while to get setup.
However some of my last games at SB24, I am a Vice Admiral where very enjoyable as the escorts appreciated that I droped heals on them and managed to comeout the fire fight a bit scortched and actually said thank you.
This I very much appreciated and respected and I will happily support those players again when I see them.
Perhaps as said we need some extra rewards, something like most healing, or most tanking, not sure exactly but some rewards other than those you get for high DPS would be nice.
I actually do very well when it comes to tanking stuff. I can hold my own against quite a few mobs set in ELITE difficulty. Like i said tho, having some escort come take ur kills while trying to take them down slowly ruins the rewards for doing good.
"taking the rankings out completely"? You do realize most MMO's keep their subscribers by Content/Rewards right? Im pretty sure everyone is not using their Ensign gear at VA and everyone with their Rares are quite happy with them. If your going to be ignorant, troll somewhere else.
This post is set for those in their Tier 1 and 2 levels. Nothing above really counts.
I frequently get top score, well above the others in a cruiser.
You just have to be agressive and ensure as you are killing one target the next is in range so you maintain as continuous a damage stream as possible.
I have gotten top score in all three ship types with all three captain classes using this strategy.
Cruisers are easiest for me, followed by escorts, and finally sci ships.
To the OP I think you may want to watch what you agro. As you spawn in the first 2-3 mobs at 12 o'clock to your position are a pain. If you head to the smaller mobs at 10 o'clock level in a wide arc to avoid those larger mobs and focus on one small mob at a time you may have an easier fight. About half the cruisers in that area are on auto-pilot too and won't return fire. Easy pickings for anyone.
For the most part, I agree with your statement. Taking other things into account, such as tanking, healing, etc. would be nice, and I'd love to see it implemented. But saying that it cant be done in a Sci ship is wrong. I have a Sci officer flying a Sci ship, and at commander levels, I was competitive with everyone else in SB24. At Captain levels I had at least 1000 more points than everyone else every time I ran it, even the times I showed up late, except the one time there were only 2 battleships to go. At RA levels I can still get top score, though not too likely if I arrive too late. We'll see what VA holds. If it is based on DPS, then DPS is possible in a sci ship. (Beam Fire at Will works wonders). The science debuffs help to keep your numbers up too. But then again, playing as my Engineer, I have experienced the exact same frustration you describe here.
