Donīt forget that any Starfleet Captain is a command officer. Classes and ship categories are made up for this game, not in Star Trek itself.

I think it would be feasible, given the way that the character is thrown into the role of Captain, that 'Starfleet' direct the path of the character until they reach the rank of Captain. That way, the character develops a sense of working with the starships best suited to their class, then once they level to Captain, they get the perk of being able to fly anything. And, with all that experience in their class of ship, they could have earned themselves a nice little ship buff that applies whenever they return to the class.

I dunno, I always felt like lieutenants and commanders should have more direction (more control) from their superiors. Probably just me though

You are an engineering GROUND officer. Your SHIP class determines your space class (for the most part).

Captains have the choice of what ship they wish to command, they're not told "you can only command X type of vessel due to your speciality".

It makes sense that in the game, you can choose any type of vessel to captain.

As we level though, don't we receive class specific abilities for space and ground? (sorry, it's been a while since I leveled much) Then we wrap ourselves up with a ship or a kit. Could/should we then be able to choose any kit like the ships?

Otherwise, my Photonic Fleet skill would have to be made available to everyone, just like all the others.

Riker was offered multiple cruiser commands and one science ship, never an escort. And the game puts us into the ships of our choice because it's OUR show. Not mentioning that it would suck if you had to play a Sisko to fly Kirk's ship. And no, there shouldn't be a buff for flying a class that has more bridge officers of your type. You get a buff with the ship class you put skill points in, period. There's no need to disallow or nerf any of the canon captain/ship combinations.

This is a new one on me - after the rather vehement protests against the idea of restricting ships based on class, somebody proposes to do just that...yeah, no. I like my tac-cruiser combo, thanks.

And people whining about the eng-escort combo - ever stop to think that maybe it's not them?

I understand that it's our adventure, I guess I'm trying to think about ways and perks to make the larger adventure (level progression) more relevant to my character's story. Make attaining the rank of Captain - a rank given importance in the various series - something more than just a title and another tier of ships (which, if it were my show, I'd have started in because they're the iconic ships. My show doesn't involve me flying the ships that I don't like ).

Some people want to fly anything - that's cool. Our stories have Borgified TOS Connies flying alongside Intrepids. I happen to also think that SF is placing too much faith in their new LTs and COs

Canon would seem to disagree with your theory. And if you disagree with the career I listed, check the histories of those captains.

As to why we can put any captain in any ship....because it's more fun that way. If you want to be specialized, then by all means go ahead. But not everyone wants to be, and there's nothing wrong with it.
Actually, the Tactical branch in STO, was actually referenced in the shows as the Command Branch. If you wanted to have a Command you had to be in the Command/Tactical branch.. I imagine it is a lot like modern Navies in which Captains have XP in all things concerning the operation of a ship at sea. Not just one specific area. Riker by your reasoning, would have nobusiness on the Titan, which is a Long Range S.ci and exploration wessel. The whole locked into a ship cls in this game is wrong and should be removed

I tell you what just occured to me reading this thread is that if/when Star Trek Online goes Free 2 Play we may see this restriction put onto silver accounts, in much the same way Champions Online restricts non paying players to certain archetypes instead of being allowed complete freedom. Makes perfect sense now I think about it...
