this technique works really well for me, and seems to be popular enough for these developers to adopt it as well. i hope this helps in the future to avoid mesh errors and geometry mistakes, such as the ones found here and elsewhere if nothing else, it may draw some inspiration.
I believe that a engine issue, the animation of the Re-Dock is not done the same way as the undock, the way the do the 'docking' can't tell what your parts costumes are... Or something.
We've developed the tech for this... but still need to do some data-side stuff to get it implemented. Sending it off to Al Rivera to finish up some time... you may not see this in right at Season 4 launch, but should be shortly after. Enjoy!
