Welcome to Star Trek Online! As others have said, you can turn off the annoying grid in sector space and when you launch the game- and now at times when you log out of the game- it automatically updates.
But, I took it to me the graphics and art were not as detailed as what you see elsewhere. If that is true you have the same problem I do at the moment. The game automatically adjusts the graphics to what your CPU and graphics card can put out. If you're like me, and have a low-end to mid-range graphics card, then what you see will not be as cool as most people or the screen caps Cryptic puts out.
Welcome to STO! If you mean that in the pictures and videos Sector space looking like a giant map with grid lines everywhere, they changed that in December to make it look more realistic. The original Earth Space Dock used to be the size of half a planet, but they changed it to the one from the movies. The original one is probably the one your seeing. I hope you have a great time playing Star trek online!
A related question -
I got the game a month ago (after waiting a year for it to be worth it) and so I never saw what sector space used to be like, before it was improved. Can anyone direct me to some screenshots or video from launch?
