Here it is in a nut-shell. I'm not sure if this particular idea has been put forth before, if it has I apologize in advance.
Say your toon is an Engineering officer, but you really do not like the Cruiser's, but you are a big fan of the Intrepid. But in order to realize the full potential of the Intrepid, you gotta be a Sci. officer right?

Here's my idea, when you put your Engineer into the Intrepid, the Sci. BOFF stations become Engineering station's and the Engineering station become's a Sci. slot. Same thing if you were a Tac. Captain, the Sci. Station's become Tac. Station's and the Tac. stations become Sci.

You could do this for every ship in the game.

I'm no programmer or game designer, but this seem's like the simplest solution that the Dev's could implement in the shortest amount of time. They would not have to deal with implementing a complicated upgrade system that would take away from them working on other things.

So what do you all think?

So in other words you want all ships to be the same? Only visual differences?

This is not a good idea.

Agreed.

These ships are designed for specific tasks, not just by the game's standards but even by canon standards. Voyager was a science vessel, its task was for primarily scientific missions. Escorts, like the Defiant, were designed for combat purposes only. Cruisers like the Enterprise were essentially all around ships and demanded a lot of power and maintenance.

Having an Intrepid work like an Escort doesn't make much sense. It also removes the balance from the game. The purpose of this and many other MMOs is to strategize and plan your character (including ship) in order to get the best possible combination. I run an Engineer with an Escort and have no problems. I can hold my own in PvP and PvE fairly well because I took the time to make sure my Escort's weaknesses were made stronger. This is how everyone should do it. Find your ship's weaknesses and make them stronger.

The ships are already available for all classes. They just work differently. There are a lot of benefits in combinations like escort/engineer or tactical/cruiser. You don't need to be any kind of officer to realize the full potential of your ship. The only exception are scientists and it's the other way around for them. To realize the full potential of the captain you should put them in a science vessel. I'm currently playing a science vessel that benefits greatly from rotate shield frequency and eps power transfer. The cruiser of my main gets a lot out of his eight weapon slots and his hull points thanks to attack pattern alpha and go down fighting etc.

No thanks. I like having my engineer fly a science ship PRECISELY BECAUSE of the many sci slots. I like having my sci in a cruiser BECAUSE of the engineer slots. I like having my tac fly a recon sv BECAUSE of the sci slots.

Yes, doing this would absolutely kill the main reason I play STO. Oddball fits for pvp.

How about instead of trying to change the ships, we'll try to utilize the game-mechanics that are supposed to help us with this, and hook up with some friends who have been playing Science Officers and have them train our Sci BOff's for us?

Heck we could go crazy and purchase Sci BOffs off the Exchange... after all, that's how STO is supposed to work, you know?

IMO - VERY bad idea. As others have said, the ships ARE available to all classes, some are designed to work better when commanded by certain classes, BUT right now, as it stands, any Class can be effectivce in ANY ship; so I don't see the need for something like this as all it does is homogenize evrything; and I don't think that's a good thing myself.

I still think the easiest solution is just to make all the BO positions on all the ships the same. There should be a universal Ensign, universal LT, universal LT Cmdr, and universal Cmdr. Then people can outfit the ships however they like. Let the ships stats be the true deciding factor - Cruisers that are heavy and slow, Frigates that are slightly faster but with fewer weapons, and escorts that have lots of weapons but less shields and much faster.

I had a similar idea. At T1 we get access to all ships in the game for that faction. But in order to get them you have to earn them or buy them. Some harder to get than others. They won't just hand out a Sovy to any captain! The BO layout is tied to your rank, not the ship, along with being fully universal. The difference in the ships are stats and bonuses. Science ships could have a full tactical crew but you miss out on the science bonus and...some ships aren't equipped to do certain things.

So similar idea but BO layout is tied to rank, not ship.
