I know someone on the Cryptic team (possibly dstahl) is on record as saying, with reference to interiors on ships, that players didn't want (paraphrasing) "endless miles of empty corridor", but I only half agree with that statement and would like to give a counter point that I suspect reflects more accurately what players do want.

On the one hand, I do agree yes, endless decks and empty corridors would not be that interesting or desirable to all that many players (it's not that I wouldn't want to see that, but I would certainly concede it wouldn't be the best use of the team's time). I'm also aware that editable ship interiors are on the distant horizon (my guess being possibly by this time next year) so will leave them out of this discussion for now.

I am included to think that players really do appreciate interior space. Especially when the spaces are primarily social ones. Spreading unrelated interactive NPC's out a little (e.g. bank, tailors, requisitions) gives a great sense of immersion. I think actually a lot of us would like to see additional decks and corridors in places like DS9/SB39/K7/Vulcan/Andoria/Earth/etc to really flesh out those locations - especially stations or planets established in existing cannon.

I'm not thinking of miles of empty corridors, but of more of adding in at least *some* connecting corridors to and using them to link to additional interior space (rather than having all vendors / NPC's immediately off the main hub - e.g. cargo bays, sick bays, labs). Something to give a sense of scale of the a station or planet (multiple ground maps for featured planets like Earth, Vulcan, Andoria, Quo'nos, Deferi, etc would be nice, especially as a pin for Foundry content!).

It would really seem a relatively cheap/easy way to use developer time (specifically of interior map designers) to create new, lasting immersive content (even if it would be a bit shallow). I say that because when I look at the great content for the Featured Episodes, having the same time and effort that goes into creating some of the memorable maps - which are only ever seen maybe 3 or 4 times by many players - go into creating much more frequently visited social hubs just seems overwhelmingly like a good idea.

At some point in the near future they (Cryptic) have stated that they intend on giving us the ability to custom create our own ship interiors using a similar toolset to that of the Foundry.
I imagine (and hope) that includes the ability to not only place objects, set lighting and texture styles, but also custom create our own corridors.
So in theory you will be able to create as big a ship interior as you want.

Foundry as it currently is does not allow us to create new corridors and rooms in the....conventional fashion. We basically redecorate existing stock maps for our missions. I would imagine that, assuming foundry does not receive major additions to map tools, we'll have the same layouts as we do now, but use foundry tools to decorate and repurpose interiors. Its possible to rearrange things by adding walls, but not add whole corridors.

But this is merely my speculation. In time the foundry could be improved with true map building tools, and we dont know yet just how tied to the foundry this feature is.

Foundry won't be out until Devs Finish Adding Wide Range of Features Including Revamped Map Tools
so my best Guess is that Foundry is not Complete without those Features. that's why Foundry is still resticted to Tribble. they would't Launch Foundry without Making Sure it has ALL of those Features and its System is Bug-Free.

Miles of empty corridors may not be fun, but it would bump up the feeling of being in Star Trek.

Many would love to see fully fleshed out interiors of the various ships. And if Cryptic isn't, and the tools do make it to the foundry, I wouldn't be surprised if one or two creative individuals making it so.

This is what I want in interiors. Watch this and part 2 to see the full extent of the interior
Mine Craft Enterprise-A

It's not large but it has a lot in it. This is what I want to see.

Bridge: Deck 01
-bridge
-ready room
-observation lounge/conference room

Departments: Deck 02
-Astrometrics
-Science lab
-sickbay

Crew deck: Deck 03
-Crew's quarters (a whole bunch)
-Holodeck
-Captain's quarters

Crew deck: Deck 04
-10 forward
-transporter room 1
-Shuttlebay

Engineering: Deck 05
-Engineering
-Engineering lab
-Cargo bay

Foundry will make the interiors more customizable, but they do not make up for the fact that standard interiors shouldn't be like this.

Fun videos! A crazy amount of work must have gone into that model (someone with that much free time and dedication to Trek needs to be given a free STO account, some incentives and pointed at the Foundry ;-)

I agree forresto, that's the level of detail I'd like to see on board ships too - especially if that content is accessible to Foundry mission editors.

Personally, I feel strongly that if it's going to be a long while before we can get tools to edit ship layouts I'd rather have just one layout per faction but for it it be a good layout and more fleshed out (and even if that means it's oversized for smaller classes of ship, like some of the Escorts or lower tier ships for now).

As an aside:

I'm very much looking forward to the TOS interior to see how it turns out. I'm personally more interested in TNG/DS9/VOY era interiors - or future interiors that are reminiscent of them - as those are what I grew up with, but what they have done with the TOS stuff so far (in Featured Episodes and in sneak preview pics) has looked really great and very familiar and faithful to the show.
