# 1 Match (target) Velocity
03-16-2011, 05:12 PM
The throttle control of the starships in STO produces gameplay that is unlike starship operation in Star Trek. Even though the STO throttle defaults to increments of 1/4 Impulse the actual manuvering of starships in Star Trek was very accurate and this is not emulated by STO. It seems Star Trek starships could match velocity of targets, so STO should add a "Match Velocity" toggle.

Think about it. The helmsman would handle much of piloting to allow the captain to command other areas. Simple orders like Match Velocity with that ship are standard in Star trek.

I personally would prefer a piloting method much more akin to EvE online than the current model. smashing buttons and hammering keys like a 12yr old on Street fighter is some people's idea o fun but is not what I had in mind whn flying a starship wth 500 crew.

This would be exceptionally great on those escort missions where the ship that is following you is flying at some weird higher then impulse, yet somewhere strange in the full impulse scale.

I think it should be a helm command as well, it would add a level of realism to missions, I vote yes!

Great idea. I'd also like a "Set Intercept Course" command and a "formation" command. The Intercept course command would calculate the target's direction and speed, figure the shortest distance to intercept the target the quickest and then plot a course. The "Formation" command would target an ally and have you automatically take up a position maybe .5k away from them, matching their speed and movement until you activate any key to turn the ship manually.

If the manual pilot had more refined control (both in direction and velocity adjustments as well as reaction time) then I'd be ok w/some basic auto piloting. If not then no because it would take away from both individual and team piloting skills' impact on gameplay.

Many players have been asking for some form of "follow" option, but STO has chosen not to implement the feature. Maybe that will change if we keep asking? I don't know, but you've got my vote for a "match velocity" whatever feature.

Within the first hour of play I wanted this. Being a noob I figured I must not know the command. Now though I know its not me, its pretty sad that such an obvious function is missing from the game.
