# 1 Would Split Difficulty work?

Here's my dilema:

I find no challenge (or fun) in playing space combat on Normal. In fact yesterday, on my New Lt, I actually had to go AFK in the middle of the fight. I left my phasers on autofire, maxed my shields, stopped my engine, and walked away from the computer long enough to get my on changed out of his PJ's, go potty, cleaned up from potty, and into his daytime pull up. When I came back my sheilds were still at mostly fulll, and the enemy Mogai escort was at half hull, and no shields.

So I generally play on Advanced and I feel like there's a nice challenge to making the turns, to having to USE shield and hull heals, etc. I suppose I could drop all my self heal powers and play that way but I kind of like having to manage it all.

However..... I hate ground combat on Advanced. It feels like a massive spam fest of Expose powers followed by exploits. Not my game. In fact I've had more missions on the ground go "stuck" then I have in space.

So why can't we have two difficulties? One for ground and one for Space? Heck I'll take the lower diff rewards just for the fun/ challenge of advanced space play.

What he said.

And I don't mind ground combat in general (as some do). I run it on advanced, and I'm fairly well set up for it. But every time I beam down there's a thought in the back of my head that says, "Gee. I hope this doesn't turn out to be impossible."

I like running on Elite, and as long as I'm facing down enemies which have appeared in a Featured Series, or the Borg, it's fine on the ground.

Unfortunately enemy groups like the "generic" ones, Klingons, Nausicaans, etc. ruin the experience of playing on a higher difficulty setting on the ground. I love the irony of when if I'm doing an explore in B'Tran on Elite, I'm relieved when it's the Borg on the ground but my heaven help us all if the D'Vito show up! :p

yeah, my biggest fear in this futuristic universe spanning game is ELITE mobs with knives.

Hey! Maybe this bit from April's Ask Cryptic can also help a little:

Q: STOHardCore If you desire to play Elite, you cannot as many ground missions are impossible at higher settings. Will this specific issue be corrected in the near future.

A: While not all missions are impossible, I understand your complaint. The issue is not with the difficulty sliders, but in the way some enemy groups scale up and add more HP and DPS. We are staffing up our systems team specifically to address this issue and give an overhaul of all enemy mobs to ensure that they are scaling properly. We are also looking at the possibility of splitting Ground/Space skill points so that players have more viability in both regions.

I've been begging for this since the Difficulty Slider was introduced. Regardless of what they do to tweak ground combat, I still think the above is a great idea, and as long as the rewards scale appropriately for each slider; I think it honestly is a better solution than the Devs forcabliy splitting skillpoints between Ground and Space. The skillpoints aren't the base issue, the issue is:

- Some will want more of a challenge from Space combat.
- Some will want more of a challenge from Ground combat.

Given Crypic's one MMO aspect continues to be 'customization'; I see no reason why saiid customization shouldn't be able to be ore refined to the individual player's tastes; and seperate Space and Ground difficlty sliders would accomplish that nicely (imo).

You read my mind. I was about to post a new topic on this but decided to search first. Glad I saw this post.

A different difficulty setting for space & ground would be wonderful.

Right now, my difficulty slider is set to "Elite". If I get to ground combat, I would beam out from the map, change the difficulty to normal and continue the mission. It's annoying but it's a lot lot better than getting beat the crap out of you during ground mission.

I see ground as R&R, not so much for combat. A time to enjoy the game. But space is serious business.

Oh the Sword Masters...

By the graphic you see they usually carry a dual pistol setup, still, to your shield and health bar they feel like dual Gatlings on steroids with a caffeine high. And airplane caliber ammo.

My only experiences to a similarly devastating hit are finding a Shilka ( ZSU-23-4 ) behind a hill top while fliyng an Apache in Microprose's "Gunship", or playing the chicken with a Jalthi in the first " Wing Commander" game.

I saw that but to be honest, it's not just a fear of unending defeat:

Simply I want the ground game to be as quick and easy as possible so I can get to the fun and challenge part. Or rather I'd like it to be fun enough to blitz through but still have the "challenge" I prefer in space combat. I want my cakes and I wants ta be eating it too!

I too have wanted a split difficulty setting. I find space challenging (and more fun) on Elite. Ground is fun, but can be a little too easy on ground Normal. Advance is usually just fine sometimes not, but even at it's worse I can somehow manage to beat any OP Advance Ground troop. But Ground Elite... As mentioned above, unless it's one of the new FE critters or Borg, F'gettaboutit.

1And I think Armsman is right. No matter how you balance things and/or allow for ground skill improvements, there will always be players will different styles that want one more difficult than the other.
